You know those bilbords by the side of the road? Theres some pretty big printers out there, that would be an image you'd want for a BIG detailed map!
If your MB can only handle so much memory, rmember that you have virtual memory too, your swapfile takes up whats left after physical memory is filled up.
Maybe someone could get this image and resize it to like 5,000 x 5,000 or something...
Cool find tho!

There's a 5400x2700 version. The best you'll get with that is 4096x2048 (for a texture size anyway - you'll likely need to split it into pieces if you were to use it. PNG preserves the exact colors. I'd recommend downloading the 5400x2700 image for your game then resizing it to 4096x2048 and splitting that up into 8 1024x1024's to use as textures.

Ever tried "Google Earth"? The recent Version works quite good. Instead of downloading 3GB and ending up with a nevertheless crapy resolution it streams nothing more than the place you are currently viewing. With terrain as well as extra Info you'll be able to get via various communitys. The freeware Version is capable of most of the things the pro version would offer. And I don't think 3GB would be enough to save a pic of the whole planet in 0.75 to 5 Meter resolutions.

a great pic
but what you miss if you are looking at this picture? WOOD! There are only a few places with wood
Notice how the texture's got a white stripe along the top, then a brown stripe, then a green stripe, then a brown one, then a white one.
