Ever tried "Google Earth"?
The recent Version works quite good. Instead of downloading 3GB and ending up with a nevertheless crapy resolution it streams nothing more than the place you are currently viewing. With terrain as well as extra Info you'll be able to get via various communitys. The freeware Version is capable of most of the things the pro version would offer.
And I don't think 3GB would be enough to save a pic of the whole planet in 0.75 to 5 Meter resolutions.
