Yes Elmo you're right, it would be too many sprites (I will have about 50 to 70 trees in the level). That's why I want to use LOD for the trees. I have made versions with 4 sprites and a simple trunk, and a single sprite version. In order to easily change between the versions (use the built in LOD), I need the entire tree (or only the sprites-part, since the model part can easily use LOD anyway) to be one model. That's where my problems started
Btw, the engine handles it quite well, for example it runs at 65 - 70 fps with 4 or 5 trees on screen (1 or two full size (near the player) and the rest about half screen size on my Athlon 700 with 32mb geforce2MX. (that will be the target system for the game, since I need 6 or 7 months until game release anyway... until then it will be a low end system .. hmm or is it a low end system already? ... I can't keep up with the speed of the computer evolution )
