Yep, this is what I was talking about. This happens whenever the camera gets too close to the shadow volume AFAIK. The effect you describe is what happens when the camera is actually _inside_ the shadow volume: the shadows get inversed. If the camera is too close to but not inside the shadow volume, the shadow usually just disappears as described by Indiglow.
Still, I don't think there's a workaround for this problem yet.
