Although you don't get a small file size, Microsoft's Video1 Codec is installed in all Windows versions from 95 up. (Can't address the XP thing, as I don't have it - or need it).

The default settings usually give fairly good results (which are):
* Thousands of colors
* Compression Quality of 75%
* Temporal Ratio of 75% (can go little higher without affecting size much)
- use a 640*480 Screen size, and your pretty much set.

My foremost recommendation: Don't ever distribute an UNcompressed AVI, as the size is astronomical!
