Hi,
essentially, there were some suggestions made how one could theoretically implement multilevel/multiplayer. However, the basic mechanisms of A4 do not allow this suggestion to be adopted. The only method so far was the method as deployed by Ross Systems in Unknown, to provide an external wrapper, which is a lot of additional effort.

JCL then announced that the ability for multilevel/multiplayer would be added in A5, albeit not in the initial release.

scotchco

Darn seems I bought too early. I know I wont be done with my project before A5 but I sure wish there was notification that multiplayer/multilevel was not supported at this time in the professional version.

I certainly hope us that bought the professional version will get a nice break to upgrade to A5. Since this is funded out of pocket, I cant afford to purchase another full copy (and a team license when and if i get team)

Thanks for the recap Scotchco.

I am however anxiously waiting for DLL support, this will open up avenues for tons more functionality as well as portability among programming languages.

Doug, where is that multiplayer workshop you promised us? ;-)

Actually,
there IS a way to do multiplayer/multilevel (which is also hinted at in the manual), it's just that it's NOT an ESAY way... Run several server instances, each with a separate map on the same IP adress, and the client will connect to the map with the same wdl script name. Now write something around that... Or wait...

Sorry for not posting sooner, but we are just about ready to release our demo.

Multi-Level is that all the clients, will be entering and exiting the same level. Almost like the Quake like Effect, Baulder Gate, they all enter the edge of the map and all the player recieve the next map. This can be done easily inside A4

Multi-Zone inside A4 which is allowing players to go from level to level, at will, no matter where other players is very hard to acheive in A4. We had a network.dll, but with A5 this became much easier.

We are wrapping up the demo now, which we are using Zone Servers, with very large maps assisgned to them. The player can go between them at will, with no problems. We are going to start the players in Zone 0, and they should be able at will to travel between zones or levels at will.

Also, with Multi-Zone, it does not have to be the same IP, you can have them jump to any server IP as long as the correct WDL is running on the server.

Hope this helps

Does Conitec plan to incorporate 'multi-zone' ability into A5?

I will definitely need it sometime this year.

Do you want 1 server doing it or multi?

If you want multi it is about done, but very hard to code, we have a fwe A5 .dll assiting us.

If you asking for one machine to run multiple levels to simulate multiple servers, it can be done now, but requires a list of things to be completed.

so I have to ask which one?

Hi Doug!

How about you multi-player workshop? Actually our team is planning to make a Quake-like multi-player game and we think your workshop will be a good reference for us. Hope that we will see it soon.
