I could make a "dummy" tree, that has some more
Polys (small) as leaves, so that the renderer recognizes them,
But does not take a whole big plane as shadow.
This way, the top of the tree casts a shadow, that is
not fully shadowing the terrain.

Can you try this with many green leaves instead of bare trees? Just interested if it looks ok

I think deciding this depends on what kind of tree model you are using. If it's one with a big amount of leaves, then obviously normally this would mean a bigger shadow get's cast. It probably would matter for those trees wether or not the leaves cast a shadow too. In my game I've got shrubs and bushes, it's all or nothing for those, only letting the trunk cast a shadow won't look good.

Cheers

This is the Wasteland
Or did you ever saw Mad Max sitting under a green appletree ?
(I might give them a little green though)

The trees are from Loopix, he used big planes, with the transparent
leaves on it. These would be recognized a a wole big quatratic leave,
and that will look crappy (I know this, even I never rendered it with it)

So I will have to make a workaround. Either by a tree with single leaves
(just for the rendering)
Or by handpainting the shadows at these places.
(Its a level editor after all, so some work can be manual...)

Shrubs and grass are ignored, and place themselves a small shadow directly
by altering he terrains shadowmap under them.

No, you should of course not change them for Wasteland, I just wanted to see a test how wrong it really looks (with leaves casting NO shadow)

Stalker seems to be a bad example - I can't see any tree shadows there - or are they just hard to see in these pictures?

nothing outstanding in Stalker compared to Oblivion that have shadows of trees
on structures , and also shadows on grass : )

Stalker won't be the great announced game.
They have been too ambitious for this game , finally it will be some
more one simple FPS !

This is how it looks like with the wrong (green) trees

The overlay in 3dGS does not look really good,
if you dont take really big treeskins, it looks to blocky
It does not help me much with the shadows either..
