You will find that snapping will be insufficient at some point. I have a tool that will align vertex locations to integer values. Works with blocks only at this time so the blocks in a group may not be perfect after group export but I am working on this issue. The simple solution would be to ungroup everyting when you are done with level design and then run the vertex snapper tool. See the link below.

I don't believe that. Maybe he refers to GMax. But that is not a "free version" for game developers. This is a tool that is meant to be used by gamers when they want to adapt games (creating modifications for UT, Quake or whatever). With that in mind they support only game formats of those finished games.
If you use it commercially then you break the license agreement.
So basically there is no free version of max. But there is one of Blender, Gamespace or Wings3D.
