Does a detail map reduce the FPS? I mean, if I increase the detail_size to let's say 25, will this be slower than a detail_size of 1 ? I think of that because if I increase the var there are more detail maps drawn...

Any ideas?

On modern 3D cards, detail maps and detail_size do not decrease the fps noticeably. On old cards there might be a decrease by around 1%.
