Why won't my level compile?

Why won't my level compile? - 10/23/01 01:45

My level compiles quickly in preview mode, but when I uncheck preview it stops while calculating visibility. I only have a few lights. There are about 2000 portals.

Please help if you can.

Non-preview builds can be much slower than preview builds. Let it run for a while.

Go and make a cup of coffee (if you don't drink coffee, go and learn how ).

Thanks. It did eventually compile--took about 12 hours. With preview on it is less than a minute.

I forgot to ask--
Can you publish a game that has only been compiled with previewand still have the same speed and quality in the final .exe file?

and...if the answer is yes...

Why should I wait 12 hours for it to compile without preview checked?

JazzDude:

Generally the answer is no. If you use a lot of WED geometry a 'no preview' build will run faster due to the visibility calculations WWMP2WMB.exe will perform. However, you only have to do one 'no preview' build when you are ready to compile the finished level. Until then do all your builds with the 'preview' box checked.

In addition, If you are satisfied with the performance on a 'preview' build then you can most certainly publish and go with that but one last 'no preview' compile would probably be worth the effort when going to final release.

Because a non-preview level will run faster. One overnight (or weekend) build at the end of your development cycle is worth it. But you can publish a "preview" level if you like.
