Run MP on Linux server

Run MP on Linux server - 08/31/08 23:52

So I have hired two Linux servers to provide vpn connections and host a few sites. Now i've hired another dedicated Linux server to experiment with GS MP games. Now I do not want to install desktop sth on the server and noticed this becomes a problem as the server likes to create a window and to run without a window one needs Pro. Any way around this without buying Pro or having to migrate to a Windows server?

The most important question: can you run the 3dgs engine
on Linux at all, since it does not support DirectX ?

Even without rendering anything on the server, I sure it will
not start without some kind of windows emulator.

Using Linux you will not come around creating some kind of advanced plugin
or totally seperate server (mad in C++ or Java for example)

DirectX9 games can run on Linux with software such as wine, but i'm only going to run the server part on it. I guess vmware could do, but it's to slow. atm i'm talking with friend in states to use one of his windows based servers. This is not a ready gameserver, but I need to test few things and make sure they are working as they should.

Hope to get it working soon, but thought maybe other members where trying to run dx9 games on Linux and have some tips.

last time i tried, or even heard reports of it 3dgs did not do too well with wine, it went incredibly slow, not sure if it was the engine or only the rendering. dont know much about how mp is effected by wine.

3DGS (A6) does work indeed well under Linux with Cedega and/or Wine(X), though not as fast as in Windows, it still is acceptable.

But I never got to test if networking works under emulation, so that would be something to test yet. But if it does, I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Will try and run a MP server in VM under Linux to see it networking works. I hope it does smile Windows servers are way to expensive not just money wise, but especially in resources usage.

Why would running it in VM solve everything? Wouldn't it take up more resources?

Sure, but this is just at home running Linux in VM player on a very good system with plenty memory. Before I install anything on the real server I want to see if it's working or not. I have a big problem with breaking things. Therefore, using VM with image I can make mess until I get it to work and only then repeat on the server.
