compiler is crashing when I build.

compiler is crashing when I build. - 11/06/08 04:00

It crashes when its tesselating surfaces. How do I fix this? I can't compile my map anymore!

EDIT: the simple build is working.

Is my computer a load of fail or something? The level isn't that big! I can't imagine that tesselation would eat up so much ram at this point.

And when I play with the tessellation size by making it bigger or smaller, either way, it still crashes. I can only do simple builds right now with no tessellation calculation.

My PC has 1GB RAM available, Dx9, 1.6GHz Duo Core Intel.

The map isn't very big either. All textures that are not visible to the player are marked "none" and the level is surrounded by a skybox

Please, does anyone know how to fix this?

can you upload the level somewhere?

I'll try to pack up what I've got so far.

And I made a mistake in my earlier post. My PC has 1 GB of RAM and a 224 MB graphics card.

Watching with the task manager open, the compiler was taking 45-65% of the CPU usage during lightmapping. I'm not sure if this is part of the problem. Took 1716 seconds for a simple build.

Level.zip

Just recall that the level isn't finished, skins and textures aren't final and are for the most part temporary.

update:

Compiler is still crashing when I do a build that involves tessellation or when I do Update Lights, but I managed to get the simple build to compile faster than an hour. It goes in about 30 seconds, which seems about right for a level this size.

Still, I'd like to fix this issue.

Wow, I just built a level, a small one, that contains a sky box and a hollow block with the top block removed and a model.

And the damn thing not only froze the computer but took almost 10 minutes to compile.

Not only that, the level won't load when I run it.

It also says that it is calculating 30,000 shadows, which makes no sense, the only light is the sun.

When you compile, try hitting the "Default Build" button instead,
see if it makes a difference.

It it does help, then go into advance settings (the >>> button) and turn on
the bits you need ONE BY ONE until you hit the one that give the trouble.
Then let us know what it is.

I got the level to load by making it even smaller.

And I did start out using the default build, but it crashed on tesselation so I did simple build.

I really think that it is tesselation. And as I said earlier, even by messing with the tesselation options, I can't get it to behave.

Can you post a screenshot of the 'advanced' compiler options at which
it works, and which ones dont?

This works: Simple build, low light calculations, default everything else.

Build BSP Map --> Compiler crashes on tesselation
Default Build --> Compiler crashes on tessalation
Update Textures --> Compiler crashes on tessalation

I've tried both extremes on the tessellation options, the compiler did nothing but crash. Small levels tesselated, but after some threshold, I could no longer tessellate.

Behind the compiler options, you can see the level I'm working on now. It is nothing but 4 walls and a floor in a skybox. There is a hill to test gravity. This level was built primarily to test my tank game out. When I built it with shaded textures, it took a long time to compile and then ran at 0 FPS. When I built it with flat textures, it runs at a healthy 30-60 FPS (preview map was at 300), and only dps at 10-12 when I've got particles and effects flying around.

If you go to the link in my signature, you can see some screens of a city I started making (several posts down). If I did a simple build with low-quality lighting calculations on that, it takes 30 seconds to compile. If I do a simple map with high quality lighting, 45 minutes or more. If I do any other build, it crashes on tesselation.

Only a couple of things I can see that MAY be causing
the issue, but guesses only.

Detail Faces is set to off, instead of auto.

Narrow Hull Offsets is set to standard 32. If your walls are thinner
than 32 this it may cause problems.

Otherwise, is there any way to send me the level?

I was having the same issue with the newest 7.7 build of 3DGS. Turns out I had some shaded surfaces in my mostly "flat" surface level. As soon as I changed those to flat, the compiler was able to get to, through and past the "tessellating surfaces" stage no problem. I'm guessing that the shaded surfaces I did have were too large.
