Walking through doors !!!

Walking through doors !!! - 04/22/01 01:48

When I'm using a mdl as a door I can walk through it. Of course passable is off.
Even if I place other mdl's in the door, I can still walk through it!!! And if
I don't attach any action to it, you can still walk through it. So it not a
problem with the action. I think this is really strange, and doesn't look good in
my game! Has anyone else got this problem too or know how to fix it.

Does the door have a lower 'PUSH' value than the player?

You can walk thru all mdls or just that one??
I can walk thru just about every model Ive made. Collision detection with models seems to not work. But Im sure not every one is suffering this or we would hear more about it. Im starting to think its the way Im making models because if you load one of the models from the download page collision detection works with them and you cant walk thru them, action assigned or not.

When I can walk through doors, I don't wear my good glasses; I do, so it's a big bug. You now a problem, not a sprinkhaan.

I don't know whether this will solve the problem or not... try setting door's FAT ON and NARROW OFF.....

@Nightwing: I tried changing push values, but it didn't help.

@Fink: It is really strange, I can walk through all my door models, and not through the rest. Event if I don't attach an action to them, so the action is not the problem.

@sac: I tried it but it doesn't solve the problem.

I think it is something with the models, but don't ask me what...

It seems that collision detection on models is non existant.

Compare your model with other models that work. It should not be too difficult to find out what mistake you've made. Perhaps you've misplaced the origin.

I have a funny solution for this... why don't u create the same door as a map entity and try it.. if mdls have lots of collision problems....

I think doors can be made as map entities .. unles u have a animated door ... ???? What do u say ??

Re: Walking through doors !!! - 04/26/01 20:05

Just an idea:
If you use things like trace, sonar,.. which can set a "you" on models/...,
perhaps there is a "you" on your door and "move" ignores "you" (see manual)

try "you = null;" before your player- "move.."-command if you don't need any of that "you"'s
or look at the trace/sonar/.. whether you can set the"ignore_models"-flag

Even this is a good idea ....

Re: Walking through doors !!! - 04/27/01 04:29

Collision detection with .mdl occurs in two different ways.

Models collide with level geometry based on the level hulls and the 'orgin' of the model.

Models collide with other models based on the 'bounding box' of the model.

If your model is moveing through level blocks then check where the orgin of the model is. I have made the mistake before of haveing the orgin at the very base of my model. I could then walk through walls i.e. a human model with the orgin at the feet instead of the mid section.

If your model is moveing through other models then you may want to adjust the MIN_X, MIN_Y, and MIN_Z values for the model. These will essentially adjust the size of the bounding box for the model.

sprinkhaan obviously resembles the Dutch name for grasshopper...

Re: Walking through doors !!! - 05/04/01 03:43

I can find any differences between good and bad models, only the origin.
But by doors you need to place the origin at the place of the hinge, and
then you can't place it in the middle.
Is there a way to convert MDL's into WMB's? When you're using WED this is
not possible, because when you try to build, it is just not doing anything.
[ruhr-it]Capella, you idea doesn't work, because if this would be the problem,
you could walk through every model, and I can only walk through my door models.
And changing the min_x etc. won't help too, because by changing this you change
the bounding box of every model. And all models are good if I am using this values,
so why not my doors?

I had the same problem with you and these are some ways to solve the problem. Firstly you must understand that you cannot use a mdl for a door. It has to be a wmb. I read what you said about the wed doing nothing and i must tell you that i have made many wmbs, including doors, this way. Just be more careful with the build options and the lighting. If this doesn;t work anyway, try to modify the door that is given as a prefab at the wed.
