compatibility with windows 7

compatibility with windows 7 - 09/12/12 17:04

I recently made a game with A6.6 and it runs okay on Windows 7 32bit with Dx90.c.

It will not run on Win 7 64-bit with DX 11. What version will run on this configuration?

I just retested it with one of my old games, and A6.6 Commercial runs fine on Windows 7 64 Bit for me. I tested both the development and a published version.
There are several factors that can make your game crash on Win7:

- failure to install the latest DirectX 9c version. Even though windows 7 comes with Direct X11, you might still need to install the newest DirectX 9c version to run A6. For A7 and A8 I know that this is neccessary for sure. See if there is a "d3dx9_30.dll" file in your game directory. Try deleting it if it is there or moving it there if it isn't.

- trying to write files into the game folder (e.g. standard SAVE_DIR or WORK_DIR). Windows 7 only allows installations to alter C:/Program Files, not running programms. For a quick test, you can right click the exe and select "Run as Administrator", this will allow the game to write again. See if this changes anything.

-Are you using any DLL plugin? Make sure all the requirements are installed (OGG DSHOW filter, VC++ redist (x86 versions!), etc)

Thanks for your kind and very detailed help. I'll give it a try.

Since my last post I have discovered that the game runs okay on both Win7 Home Premium 32 and 64 bit but not on Win7 Professional.

Is there a fix for that?

Any version of A7 and A8 ran perfectly fine on my Windows 7 x64 Pro. Maybe it is a machine specific problem? What exactly does not work for you?

The post is about A6.6

The game stopped immediately with a black screen on the Win7 pro computers of two separate friends.

Strange, because I also have Windows 7 Professional Edition 64 Bit and my own A6.6 games did run fine here. Which game exactly are we talking about? I could try running it.

I'm using A6.60 Commercial.

Both the new games, Pearl Harbor Encounter and Dragon Bane have the problem. I would appreciate your test. Perhaps there's something I'm ignorant about that could make a difference.

They are small downloads--under 10 mb. Thanks.

I tested Perl Harbour with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version.
Worked fine, although i didn't get the promotion never.

Upload a non-installer version and more people, including me, would be willing to test.

I tested Pearl Harbor on Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit (Service Pack 1, fully patched) and it worked fine.

My system in case it helps:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor
4 GB DDR2 Ram
AMD Radeon HD 7870 Graphics Card

Wow...the mystery deepens.

Yes, I would appreciate some more tests.

Pearl Harbor ...no installer

Runs on a native Windows 7 64 bit on the latest 17" MacBook pro as well

Mucho thanks to you all for testing. Since it won't play on a new laptop in Alaska or a muscle desktop in Utah, perhaps the Euro version of Windows 7 Pro is different. One would think an OS that hogs seven gigs of space would do everything for everyone everywhere. Maybe Microsoft needs more nerds on their programming committees. (Just regurgitating my sour grapes) grin

Apparently the engine is not to blame. Case closed.

You have to think out of the box if it doesn't work as expected! wink
