3DGS on Intel Macs

3DGS on Intel Macs - 06/09/05 17:09

So, Mac just announced they're switching to intel CPUs. If Mac runs on an intel CPU, does that mean that 3DGS will run on it? Will it require a little tweaking or a lot? Or does the OS still make it prohibitive?

Thanks!

i think the problem with porting 3dgs to apple pcs wasn't so much the cpu architecture but directx.

there is and there will be no directx for osx. maybe it will be possible to install windows on apple pcs though so it should be possible to use 3dgs with them.

Short answer, 3DGS runs on Windows machines with DirectX9 or greater. We don't care about the hardware, only the OS.

Long answer, honestly we have to wait to see what Apple does. Sounds like they are going to support a duel-boot setup. If they make this easy so you can run a full (not emulated) Windows OS in a window, then the problem may just solve itself.

I heard that Windows may be able to run on Apple machines, but that OSX will not be able to run on PC machines due to some hardware differences, but I will have to check into this again to see if I am remembering correctly.

Dan: That is Apple's plan right now. Support Windows on the new Macs but make MacOS only run on Apple hardware. A win-win for Apple if they do it right.

If they go this way, and the Apple hardware has a good 3D card, then I don't see much of a future market for Apple games. Any hardcore Mac gamer will buy a copy of Windows.

That question is similar to whether 3DGS will run on Linux: with some 3rd party emulator it might work.
