Improving WED's 3D view - 11/26/05 23:25

sorry if this topic was discussed already, I did an search but no satisfatory results

Well, I want to know how can I improve at best quality the wed's 3D view, 'cause I need to texture some objects and my actual 3d view is at a low quality. The objects I want to texture are a little bit complex and I need the best quality even if this mean decrease performance.

I tried to change dlls from the preferences but some dlls was not accepted and other doesn't improved the view

My PC configuration is an athlon 1.3 - 128mb ram, hd 20gb, video card ATI RADEON 9550 SE 256mb...yes, I know, I should do an upgrade on it

Use GXL2DX8A.DLL for the best quality. GXLBASE.DLL is poor quality and thus avoid it.

...and after that:

right click on 3d viewport
-->glx-->glx properties, set a tick in every box, click "advanced d3d [...]"
-->"texture stage state"
-->"d3d texf_anisotropic" in all 3 categories. shouuld do the trick.

In WED: File -> Preferences -> Below Video Out, click the folder button and choose GXL2DX8A.dll for both 2D/3D views. OK twice.

great, thanks, that helps a lot for texturing, but when i go to build, it sometimes tells me that my surfaces are too large to be shaded, or that my level is leaking..., this doesnt happen with the other settings.

Are you building indoor or outdoor levels?

at the moment, it is only the shell of a house, but a mansion, a very big one... no sky's or real detail has been applied yet, but its pretty early on.

why would a level being indoor or outdoor make any difference. Technically, nothing "defines" and indoor/outdoor level. Outdoor levels simply, often times, take up more space, which leaves more for the engine to render... Please explain.

As I see it, an indoor level is one where you have no possible way of getting outside the level in any normal means. Outdoor levels are where you can normally get outside the level without the use of invisible blocks. Indoor levels have ceilings and walls forming hallways. Outdoor levels have no roof and walls can often be several hundred feet away. Outdoor levels indirectly have a roof - the sky, but skies are normally passable. That's how I see the difference between indoor and outdoor levels.

As for the original post, after setting the GXL2DX8A.DLL setting for both the 2D and 3D views, in WED go to view > textured to show textures.
