virtual memory

virtual memory - 02/25/07 22:40

Hello,

I have a question that I'm not sure really belongs here
or in bugs depending on your answer I guess.. so here goes:

Why Does Wed not recognize the difference between actual Memory
and virtual Memory?

I only ask because virually memory becomes pointless and slow
once you hit the 1 - 2 GB range.

Beleive me you can a big difernce in using 1 GIG or more
memory directly as compared to using virtual memory that runs
from Harddrive which is going to be much slower....

I usually turn off virtually memeory and get allmost instant load time on
Windows and of course Games like Doom3 run extremely fast.

With WED 6.50 I have to re-enable virtual memory ...
I do hope this is adressed in a future update.

I agree that it's not good to run a out of physical memory, but I'm afraid the only fix is to go to a computer shop and purchase some more. WED can't help you in that regard - if that was what you requested.

No your miss-understanding me...
I have plenty of Memory and Few Resouces running.

What I'm saying is Not even using Virtual Memory
but usning Pure memory and Disableing Windows
from Using Virtual memory.

This way is A lot faster because as I said memory can be
acessed a lot faster than the Hard - Drive.

But The Case is With the Latest update....
I does not work without Virtual Memory enabled.

(Don't really recalled if past version did this or not)

So what I'm asking is Why cant Wed/ The Engine itself
etc...
Be set to run with out Virtual Memory enabled for
all of us that Have reached the 1GB+

I hope you understand me now?

Hmm, I guess you're the one who doesn't understand. There's certainly some info on the internet where you can look up how virtual memory works in detail, but here it is in short:

The virtual memory handler is part of the Windows kernel (not of WED). Virtual memory consists of physical memory plus a hard disk space that you've reserved (or not). Windows first uses the physical memory, and then when running out of it begins to swap memory pages to the hard disk.

All programs on your computer use virtual memory for storing their data, and terminate (or crash) when running out of it. Thus it was a bad idea to disable your hard disk allocation for virtual memory.

No I understand very well how memory is handled in Windows....

For someone who doesn't have a lot of physical memory on their computer
certainly it would not be advisable...

But I have had virtual memory turned off for over
a year and can confirm that everthing ( except A6 )
runs quite well running from virtual memory.

If you actually try it on A Newer top-line computer system
with 1GB+ you would understand exactly what I'm saying...

In Short is there a way to configure WED/ The A6 Engine to
Realize that Physically memory is being used and
ignore that I have little or ( no virtual memory )
being used.

Would make it easier than have to re-enable virtual Memory
and re-start just to launch WED - RUN.

Thanks,

There isn't an easy way around using Virtual memory on a Windows machine. Our program just asks for memory, it doesn't know (or care) where it gets it from. It is up to the WindowsOS to make those memory calls as fast as possible.

Unless I missed something (and I didn't program WED) WED isn't asking to use virtual memory, it is your OS that is causing it to run there.

Ok so If I roll back my installation to a previous
one such as 6.3 and Wed does not prompt me....

well then would that prove my point?

I just refuse to believe that a 1 room level with 3 models
can Eat that much memory..
when I run the Whole Game Doom3 with no
virtual Memory enabled.

If A6 Engine/ Wed eats that much memory more
than the Well known Memory hungry Doom3....

then We have a problem...

Game editing takes far more memory than game playing.

If the game engine eats up that much more memory, then you have a problem.
