Problem with Blocks - 08/26/06 22:02

It doesn't matter which prefab I place in my world, but everytime I get this message during compiling: Error: Remove Block # Plane to Narrow.

What can I do about this ?

EDIT: Sorry just reread your post and noticed you said you were using prefabs. Do you mean the ones that came with 3dgs? If so then your best bet would probally just try building them yourself... Im not sure why they would produce the error as Id figure the prefabs would be properly built... never used them myself tho so couldnt really say.

Delete the block. You made it too thin... Did you use CGS subtract? If yes thats probally where it came from. You shouldnt use cgs subtract but instead build the faces by hand using face edge and vertex move.

You can find the block easily by going too edit> find object and typing the number of the block they gave you in the error.. You may have to do it a few times to find all the blocks tho.

Any block with a surface smaller than 2x2x2 quants will almost always cause problems when compiling. For fine detail like that, use models as they allow for sizes to 1/64 quant and smaller (this has little meaning - anything more precise than 1/16 quant has little meaning and not worth doing. Blocks must always use integerical coordinates. Models do not. Plus, models render in excess of 50 times faster than blocks can.

My world (test area) is atm around 120x120x80 so it isn't small. The strange thing is that every prefab doesn't works.

The level size doesn't matter. Even if you went clear out to 100,000 quants diameter, any 2x2x2 block will, to some extent, cause problems. With models, you don't have this limitation (and they render up to 100 times faster allowing for 100 times the detail). A tiny level is anything less than 4096 quants in diameter (extending 2048 in each direction from the origin). If using prefabs, make sure you don't scale them. If neither is the case, then what version and edition do you have? In WED, go to help > about. Two examples are 6.20.2 Pro and 6.40.5 Extra.

So what ur trying to say, is that I can't use the prefabs ?

You can use prefabs and they do work. For the fun of it, try another prefab or two. If they still don't work, please tell what version and edition you have. Certain older versions have bugs that prevent things from working as I'm expecting.

Re: Problem with Blocks - 08/28/06 15:18

I'm almost out of ideas. The only thing I can come up with is to run a small experiment. Make a new test level (and don't save it as "untitled", this has been known to cause problems). Add a simple block and build the level. If it builds just fine, add another block. If that builds fine, then try adding a prefab. If you get build errors upon doing so, delete the prefab. If you don't get build errors, then it's something with your level that's at fault. If you did get build errors, then try adding your WMP file to your old level where your prefabs weren't working. Since the test level has built successfully, by adding this to your level where prefabs aren't working, you can finalize your analysis. If it doesn't build with your own prefab that you built earlier in the experiment, then it's something with your level. If it does build, then it's something about the predefined prefabs that are faulty. Another option is to try using an older version, such as 6.31.4 and see if it works there. If it works in 6.31.4 and not 6.40.5 (assuming that's 6.40.5 rather than 6.40.0), you may have found a bug.

By using the scientific method for running experiments (setting up a control and some variables), you can learn about almost anything in great depth, provided the experiment is processed well. If your level is building and loading as a normal level just fine, but not as a prefab, this is a big clue.

I'll test if your block test works.

EDIT: It works fine if I try building a new level, and add a Prefab init. But what could be the problem of my other world, cause I spend much coding on it, so to get it back like that will take much time.

Re: Problem with Blocks - 08/29/06 00:43

Could you post a screenshot showing the prefab in your level in WED? I don't need the whole level shown, just the area where you're trying to add the prefab and where you have this prefab. To post screenshots, you'll need to upload the image to either your webhost or an image-hosting service like imageshack or photobucket. To get a screenshot, just press the "PrtScr" key, located just to the right of the F12 key at the top of the key board, open MSPaint, shrink the image to a 1x1 size, then press control+V to paste it then save the image into whatever format you want. For best results, I save the screenshot as BMP then open a more worthy image edittor like GIMP and save it into the format needed from it as these programs do better than MSPaint. In many cases, for screenshots of Windows programs, PNG does best, but for games, JPG does better.
