MED: Hard and Soft Edges at created Models?

MED: Hard and Soft Edges at created Models? - 02/03/10 10:22

Is it possible to alter the hardness of edges in MED at models I designed from single vertices or imported from a CAD software? At the tool properties panel, there is the option for hard or soft edges when you insert a primitive. Is it possible to influence that afterwards to get harder or softer edges at the rendering?
Thx.

Ist es möglich, die Härte von Kanten in MED bei selbst gebauten Modellen zu beeinflussen? Im Properties Panel gibt es die Selektion Hard oder Soft für Primitives, die man in die Szene setzt. Geht das auch nachträglich?
Danke.

Hard edges are achieved due separating the touching faces, means the vertices of that edge are doubled. You can achieve that within MED only by selecting a 'side', copy it, deleting it and re-insert it by pasting it. Hope, it is possible to understand this explanation.

Afterwards, in game you can it influence only by shaders, as far as I know.

Thank you, Pappenheimer.
I understand the procedure, but that sounds like a looooong effort with doubtful results. I do not think that you will get that model closed at the edges.

The results are not doubtful, unless you need a closed mesh for the shadow that you use.
Take the standard cube create it with soft edges, select a side etc. like I described, you don't need to move anything, the vertices are at the identical position.

It still is a lot of work.
To avoid it, you could switch the shading of. 'Unlit'? I'm not sure about that.
If you baked an ambient occlusion shadow into the model's skin, then it shouldn't be too noticeable, that it isn't shaded.

It btw isn´t unlit but ShadeMode.
Edit: sry, unlit is of course right to completely switch off the shading.

Hello,

the copy, delete, repaste process on each facet works but that is a boring process when you have some more facets on a model and it does not work with stencil shadows. I found a workaround. I convert the model to 3ds, import it into my CAD software, convert it to a solid there and reimport that to MED via 3ds. I use IronCAD for this, maybe there are other, cheaper modelers with the same ability.

The make hard or make soft tool for groups of meshes would be a very desirable tool for MED.

Your solution is much faster, but it doesn't work with stencil shadows either, does it?

you can also use third party tools like blender to bevel he edges you want to be soft. it can make models softer, and the shading will be better(except on round models)

I checked that, works perfectly. No holes, no mistakes.

Seems, that the CAD software does something similar to that beveling in blender, I guess.
