DDS Transparency - 08/02/12 23:41
Hi, I have a DDS colour map and I would like to have a specular map in its alpha channel. I placed the spec map in the alpha channel using Photoshop and exported it as DDS DXT5. However, when I import it in MED as a skin the Texture Format section is disabled and I cannot convert the DDS image to 24bit to remove the alpha transparency so that it doesn't make the model transparent. Is there something I am missing? Perhaps when I exported it as a DDS in Photoshop?

i always save them in DXT3 in GIMP, although DXT5 should work as well for alpha channels but never tried it.

I believe both should store the alpha channel; however, when I use it as the skin in my model it shows up in the engine with the specular map as its transparency. In other words, the model appears see-through. In other models I have used I was able to set the colour map to a depth of 24bits (instead of 32bit) so that the alpha channel wasn't displayed as a transparency-- except I can't do that with DDS for some reason.

well i cant say anything about PhotoShop but in Gimp you do the following:
- Open your defuse, normal and Spec map
- save your defuse as DXT1 and close it.
- now copy your spec map
- add alpha channel to your normal map
- add layer mask to your normal map
- paste spec map on it
- anchor layers!!!
- save as DXT 3 (or 5 sould work aswell)
- Done!
in Gimp i dont worry about setting 24/32bit manualle as this is done alredy by setting betweet DXT1-5.
