what the hell is with skin editor figured it out!! - 02/19/06 07:31

I have read the tutorial 50 times to create the mdl mapping it does not work and does not clearly explain how to do this. I'm getting so pissed at this thing right now. How do I just take a cube create the mapping for the skin on all 6 sides then exprot that as a bmp to bring into photoshop so I can add some texture to it. HOW??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Not trying to be rude or bossy but some things that just wont work can piss you off really bad sometimes when theres little documentation on how to do it or little explination about it.

had to put these in to make me feel better lol

Thanks in advance

Activate sync skin selection in options.

Select the faces you want.

Create a md2 mapping from that side.

still lost got to the option part then i selected the faces in med then go into skin editor click on md2 mapping hit front then ok then i get a front outline of the model then i click md2 again this time select right and then half of the image from front model goes away and cant be seen. It's like the right image is now overriding the front.

Can you explain in more detail pelase?

OMG I finally figured this out after a few hours lol so just for anyone that sees this thread and wants to know the answer do the

activate sync skin s\election in options
select the faces in med no the skin editor
now say if u selected the front face of a cube go into the skin editor click md2 mapping and select front or back it depends on how u have the model positioned in 3d space, then click ok move the newly created skin box somewhere out of the way then do the same for all the other sides of it.

Then export to bmp paint it save it and then import it back "import skin image"
if u need help like me email me at smog890@hotmail.com

thanks for help shoreVietam

LOL, over the last 2 years i've seen a couple topics describing how to select polygons in MED so that they would also be selected in the skin editor.

I could never figure out what people were saying :P

This has to be the cleanest and easiest explaination I have ever seen I actually know how to do it now!!

Thanks for starting this thread, Smog! And thanks to both you and ShoreVietam for the explainations!

Well, it still confuses me. Your explanation is very clear, however, my MED (6.785)doesn't have an options selection anywhere on the menu or toolbar. No Sync skin either. I have a previous mapping that I want to change but I cannot get rid of the old mapping, I can select a single face in MED but all that does is select that face in the old mapping in the skin editor. I think sync skin is what I am missing but there is no options selection and no sync skin.

Same here... I'm useing the most recent "public beta" (standard edition) and I can't find anything even remotly close to "sync skin"
and I too am having the problem of "when i select a new set of faces, the old set dissapears".

Does anyone have a solution to this for the new beta?
I've done all the searching I could think of, and turned up nothing.

MED Features are really bad documented, even after 5 (or 6?) years I still don't know what the "Merge" button does... :-/

Re: what the hell is with skin editor - 03/09/06 08:19

i can tell you. merge button is my best friend in med. whenever i export meshes from cinema4d the mesh is broken along the uv-borders. merge does exactly what it says in a nearly perfect way:)

hmm... I never ever imported any model, maybe that's why I've never seen a change. ^.^"

Re: what the hell is with skin editor - 03/09/06 11:38

Becoming familiar with the skin editor is not an easy task.
Let me first explain, how to create an empty skin. This must happen before you can map anything. I found a good description for that in an older thread:

"Here's what is working for me:
a. Open MED
b. Add model
c. Open 'manage skins'
d. Click 'new skin' (This also opens 'skin settings')
-- Click 'texture', click 'texture format'
e. Go back to 'manage skins'
-- Click the skin name in the list-box
f. Go back to 'skin settings'
-- Fill in the texture format boxes, then click 'OK' // 1024 * 1024 for example
g. Open the skin editor
-- You should see an empty skin, that's ready for mapping
h. Map away, have fun
i. Paint on the lines

Look at the bottom left corner of the skin editor. See four color boxes. Each time the skin editor is started, - left to right - these boxes default to red, green, blue, and white.

Box number two is the triangle fill color, when using the flood fill tools. Note that the box-two color will always fill the triangles, even when not selected.

Boxes one, three, and four are the line fill colors, when using the flood fill tools."

But now to your question:

Mapping a model:
1. Minimize the skin editor window.
2. From the model (or the group), select those faces, that are best seen from a certain angle (left / right / front / back / ...), and that should be connected on your uv-map.
3. Create MD2 mapping for those faces.
4. Maximize the skin editor. You should see now the faces that usually cover the whole skin. Resize and position them on the UV-map (does not have to be exactly, just to make room for the next mapping)
5. Hide these faces in MED. This will also hide the faces on the UV-map. If you skip this step, the faces will disappear, when you create the next mapping.
But now they are only hidden on the map. You can see them again, if you select "show all" in MED.And Hiding the faces, that are already mapped is also
good, because you see (not) what is already mapped.
6. Now you can proceed with the next part of the mesh. Select "Hide selected" after each mapping.
7. If your model is completely invisible, everything should be mapped.
Now you can select "show all" and everything should be there on the uv-map and can be arranged.
8. Before you export this to your paintprogramm, make sure, to paint the lines (see above).

I hope, I didnīt forget anything, I didnīt do it very often myself.

I think this thread should be added to FAQ.

It helped me too.
