vertexes are breaking?? - 06/25/06 23:39

geez this is really annoying problem
i've recently made a character, but can't continue on it just becouse some parts of it looks like flat shaded not gourauded as should be. in addition to that,, the vertexes on defected parts are multiplieing!

this is render from 3dsmax. As you can see the problem starts here

and this is within MED:

does anybody has a clue why is that?

I guess you exported your model to .3ds , i had that problem too, try to export your model to .X format

i've tried two X exporters

one did that thing with whole mesh and actually made all faces 2-sided
and second one didnt even worked

any suggestions?

Have you used Panda DirectX export plugin?

Re: vertexes are breaking?? - 06/27/06 18:24

yeah. thats the one that makes whole model look like flat shaded in gouraud mode
but i fixed 2-sided with it by removing an option

here is a screenshot what happens with pandasoft exporter:

ok i fixed the problem, thanks for any help i received.
3DRichard... sposiba! :]]

so what i did was,, i exported the model as pandasoft X from 3dsmax, imported into med,, and i had that 1k's vertex count,, so i exported model from MED into 3ds and imported back into 3dsmax,, now after i welded all vertexes together i exported it into 3ds format again,,, imported into MED and wholah,, it works!

Set the optimize mesh to normal or optimize, that should make most of the model
look gourouded.
I have just find out why some parts of the model gets defected, this is because
UVW mapping. In those places where UVW gets splited, the model gets defected.

Sorry for my english, because i'm not very good in it.

Re: vertexes are breaking?? - 06/27/06 20:05

Your solution really works, BUT what you have done with all that exporting is
that you made UVW mapping into one piece, that's why your model is all gourouded.
Instead exporting several times, you could just apply a planar mapping in 3DSMax
and export your model into .3ds format and the result would be the same.

In addition there is another big BUT.
You can make your model in 3DSMax and export it to MED and make it look good,
in your way, or my way (it dosen't make any difference), BUT when you will need
to do mapping, you will be need to do it in MED(in my opinion mapping in MED is
very hard)to avoid mesh defection. If you do mapping in 3DSMax, you will have
to export your model to MED with defections and then manualy weld all those multiple
vertex to make the defected parts to look gourouded.

Or you could use other software to export your model to .MDL, like Blender(it's free), looks like it has an .MDL7 exporter

but anyways,, thanks for explanation neighbor, appreciate your help!
