Sword WIP - 01/08/08 15:02

I'm back... wow...

After 3 years I appear out of no where with a screen shot of a project i'm working on.

Actually some how my password was reset and I didn't know it... so I had to contact Conetic to manual change it.

This sword is being rendered in Blender and will be a weapon in my project. It will be a long time before you actually see the project but i'd like to get some comments on some pieces of work.

3D Render: (Still being worked on)

can we see some wireframe renders?
It looks like the handle is waaaaay too high poly (or maybe even nurbs?).

nice sketch though, but nothing really special so far.
try adding like a cool effect to it

If you fight with a handle like that, it is easy for the enemy to pull the sword out of your hand,
as his swords blade gets stuck in your handle.

and i doubt that they had the technique to make metal round like that. it's just swords always have hard edge handles in reality

The form looks good which is because you had a nice reference picture
But mind that the rendering qua visual quality will be different from when using it in the A6/A7 engine

Cheers

You made a very typical assumption and I understand where you're coming from. Way back swords were not so smooth... but...

It is a fantasy game.

Well I do understand how important poly count is in game development. I have worked with 3DGS a long time now... and know the difference between it and Blender.

This actual render is for the title menu background... It is not the actual in-game model. Although, the sword itself is a key object in the game.

people would be amazed how accurate blacksmith back then where able to work and what forms they could create.

my biggest problem with the sword its the handle. its way to thick and bulgy. you would have the hardest time fighting with it.
i interprete the two peaks left and right of the blade as thin metal plates as well.

another thing is the too short grip compared to its thikness. it should be arround 100% longer to match the human hand anatomy.

another thing is the weight. boy if the handle is full metal, it might be way out of balance and unpractical to use and way to heavy. if its not metal but a lighter material it doesnt make much sense then any other sword will crush it into pieces in no time.

beside the balde sticking out i cant see how the rest should be constructed or welded. it looks like somene cutted it out of an iron block or melted it in one piece.
metal, especially back then, will need screws, connection lines and and and to make it looke "hand crafted".

btw the grip for the hand should be bulged out (elipsoid) not in like it is now. the hand will form a natural hole when you grab something. the way its made now, you will have some empty space inbetween the hand and sword (=> uncomfortable and uncontrolable).

hope the one or other suggestion might help

looking forward to see more and the textured version of the sword

cheers and keep it up

It's all about sense of imagination mates...

Seriously, I do understand where you're coming from but I am not trying to design this realistic super-great-awsome-best-selling game.

It is just a fantasy story... It does not have to be perfect and meet real life standards. Who thinks about a handle being comfortable in someones hand when making a video game anyway?

Now take a look at this... try holding and fighting with this in real life... ( but yet, this is still an awsome game)

Any who...

Here's an update of the sword itself. Complete, just the way I want it for the render... which will be used to create the title:
