Survive! version 0.57 update / online team survival game - 08/09/09 18:56

Hi folks,

I'd like to present you my newest project: "Survive!"
Please keep in mind that this is an early version, the grafics are ..well.. basic, and a lot of features are still missing.

Official Server online 24/7 (Location Germany).
If you get "no server found" after clicking "join official online server", it's not available.
Opening an joining LAN servers is now possible.

The idea: You and the other players are trapped in a desert. You've got 80 seconds to build up a defense using some old crates, after that you'll be attacked by endless waves of monsters.. First, it's only slow mummies, but it's going to get worse! Good thing you brought your weapons with you.

New update:
I've released Version 0.57.

Download: 10Mb

http://rapidshare.com/files/267660864/Survive__V0.57.zip
or
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IQ6UZ6AO

If no new enemies are spawning, enter "/catch" in chat (without the ""). I'll then get a bug report. only use this when the bug appears!

Changes from v 0.56 to 0.57
- tried fix "stuck on waves" bug,
but it might still be there
- added some debug info

How to Play, quoting the readme.txt
Quote:
- start the starter.exe file and enter your nickname and the other options
- press "Join official online server"
Note that currently no more than 8 players can play at the same time.

The game will then connect and start. There are two phases in this game. You can enter an already started game in both of these phases.

1. Build Phase:
Place barriers in the level using your mouse. Try to build a wall around the player spawn area!

2. Fighting Phase:
Waves of enemies will come and attack you. You are advised to stay behind your barriers.
When reaching a certain amount of "points" (indicated in the left upper corner)
new weapons will be unlocked. Be aware that the enemies get stronger with every wave.
Additionally, the waves will never stop. So try hard to survive longest. If you die while others
are still fighting, you have to wait for them to die. A new round will start after the scores
have been shown to all players.

Key assignments:

W-A-S-D: Move the player or camera around
Left mouse: Shoot or place barrier
Right mouse: Remove last placed barrier
r: Reload weapon
1-5 and mouse wheel: Switch weapons
Enter: Chat
ESC: Quit

Good luck!

Hint: If you are on your own, a good defense should look like this:

Technical details:
- uses the native 3DGS network engine (direct play), no plugins
- should be playable with a latency up to 200 ms
- up to 30 moving attackers at the same time,
dplay_entrate is set to 2
- max 8 players for now

Known Problems:
- server has "phantom" players on it, because num_clients is inaccurate. this is a known bug of A7.77 and A7.80 Beta
- because of that, new rounds might start although there is no player. if you start in fighting phase with no defenses, just get yourself killed. a new round starts after that and you can build.

Planned features:
look here

I'd be happy about any comment on the game or the gameplay,
but please, don't spam about the graphics.

Hope you have some fun,
-SchokoKeks

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/09/09 19:40

Great game smile I like the idea of playing. I think I won the round we played ;-)
Sometimes the game is a bit monotonous. Maybe you could add a feature like
slow builing of boxes. The player can stop building a box, but if he does the box will be destroyed. So he must deciede if he shoots or builds boxes...

And make the ki a little bit better, so that they go into the area if they can and don't continue destroying boxes...
Another point is the running. In our round you saw that I could run away from the enemy's. Make the player slower or something like this, but at the moment the player can run and run and run and the enemy's don't hit him...

I hope you will add the lan feature, because I think the game will be great on lan-party's smile

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/09/09 19:57

Really nice game grin
I thought I won, Martek... wink
Its fun, but you should add more group features (like calling a jet which drops bombs around the middle) and more weapons (sniper, grenades or drones which shoot at the monsters too).
The performance is quite good, I didn't have any lags.
The graphics are ok for me.

Continue on that project!

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/09/09 20:02

Well it was quite some fun!
First I thought the monsters wouldn't be able to destroy crates.
But they did, that was pretty much a surprise wink

I also agree with martek on the AI. Didn't have any lags too but at the end I lost the connection.
Playing it alone was pretty much boring though.

Keep it up!

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/09/09 20:37

But at the end when I died my points top left said something aroud 33000...
I forgot to say some points:
Add a box destroy sound and maybe some effect when the boxes are hit.

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/09/09 21:16

Very well done!
Things to improve:
o the player's movement (especially jumping, as you know, camera bobbing)
o add a little gravity script to the boxes => players can build bridges/towers and so on...
o hitzones
o places where you have to buy your weapons (like in CoD5 - Nazi Zombies) so the player has to move

And please spend 90%+ of your time on the gameplay and <10% on the graphics!

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/09/09 21:20

thanks for the kind replies!

I'll add some power ups (health packs, quad damage, air strikes) to add some variety. Jumping is also on the to-do list now.
also, I found some new bugs: the score list is not always complete, martek should have won that round but his score wasn't shown. plus you can't read all of the chat if you type in long messages.

btw it took me 3 weeks of programming to do is. it's still written in C-Script, not lite C. maybe i should port it later. client_id would sure be helpful.

the next update might take one our two weeks, so please continue to post all problems and suggestions you have! Thanks

Edit:
got a good idea about the weapons:
as soon as one of the players reaches the required points, an airplane will drop a crate somewhere in the level where all players can get the new weapon. this will require jumping on crates as most players totally block the spawn

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/09/09 22:06

i played together with SchokoKeks and it was quite fun!

There was no latency problems. current system is quite solid except for a few little bugs... gameplay is a bit monotonous but, that could be improved with some ideas, like SchokoKeks already said, powerups, boss waves and such... i already made a lot of suggestions in-game, hope they were helpful.

I'd like to play again with more players, game is pretty fun at it's current state more people can be more fun, waiting for nex update wink

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/09/09 23:02

Nice Game, it makes really fun to play!
Played it with Schokokeks to Wave 7.. Then died ^^

Things which can be made better or should be created:

-Ingame Menu , to in/decrease the Mouse Sensivity
-Afer Setting the whole Defence, a Button should be appear, which you can start the game without waiting for the Counter!(All Players must accept!)
-Delete Crate Function, if the user created a Crate at "the false" position
-Enemy's left Digit
-Player's Score Panel(which can be opened wiht TAB or something else)... This Panel shows the Current Users / the Score / Ping and Kills from all Players.

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/10/09 10:31

Hm... I always joing in the fighting phase, when the first wave starts, never been able to start in build phase. And since I'm always the only one online, it's kinda hard to survive...
Posted By: SchokoKeks

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/10/09 10:51

from the server log it looks like others had that problem too.
There is a simple workaround:
Get yourself killed by the enemies, after that a new round will start in the build phase.

it seems that the engine variable "num_clients" does no longer get set to 0, although there is no one on the server. I'll post a bug report soon.

Edit:Version V0.55 is now released, please look at the first post for details.

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/10/09 16:50

So, played now 2 rounds alone XD - 7 wave laugh

So, the waepon should be better after 15.000 points and a really big, big weapon for 25.000 like a railgun grin

nice game - please be more online grin

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/10/09 18:32

Well that was a nice round with quadraxas and schokokeks.
My personal record: 55656 points

Here some ideas:
- give the creates gravity (was already mentioned)
- balance the enemies and create classes (examples below)
- - fast enemy, making little damage, having not many healthpoints
- - normal enemy, making average damage and having average healthpoints
- - slow strong enemy, making lots of damage, having lots healthpoints

I know there is already some balancing and some enemies are faster than others but maybe you could work on that a little?

- Define hit-zones, maybe even some which are not always very vulnerable (for very strong enemies e.g.)

- enable changing weapons while reloading (but this could also be a tool to make the game more challenging)

Well all in all I can say this is already a very good game, making lots of fun playing with others. If you are on your own its not all that exciting though (my opinion).
This kind of game could be transferred into lots of different settings:
- futuristic: think of star ship troopers, alien closing in and you laying heavy fire on them (pistol, shotgun, mg, sniper, atom grenade)
- fantasy: more a hack&slay setting with mediaeval weapons (dagger, sword, bow&arrows, crossbow)

- player classes:
- - soldier (different kind of weapons and upgrades)
- - medic (smaller amount of different weapons, but can heal himself and people)
- - ...

Keep it up! This could turn into a very good 3DGS multiplayer game!

We must player together with 8 people !

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/10/09 19:40

I played with Xarthor, Richi007, Timothy and Boh_Havoc. It was kinda buggy, but i'm pretty sure that we all enjoyed.

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/10/09 19:51

Wow I love the idea behind it. It's nice to see that the multiplayer comunity in this forum is growing!

If I have some free time I will try it with a friend.

EDIT: I just had some ideas:
It would be cool if you are able to build a stationary machine gun (in build mode) that can be used for a decent time and after that it's overheated and you have to wait a bit.
And I think placing mines would also make fun ^^
And placing barrels that explode when you shoot at them.
Posted By: Xarthor

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/10/09 20:07

Some new ideas:
- When joining a running game the player should be invincible for a few seconds. otherwise you may not have a chance when you join inside a big crowd of enemies

- to enemy classes: maybe make the enemies vulnerable to different type of weapons?

Re: Survive! version 0.55 updated / online team survival game - 08/10/09 20:14

important news for all players:
If you get "Connection lost", please wait at least 10 seconds until you rejoin. Otherwise your slot will be taken until i restart the server, and it reaches it's 8 player limit soon. This is due to a A7 Bug, we will have to wait for the next public beta.

thanks for the feedback, I'll keep you up date.

Edit: symptoms of a full server are:
the game starts, the server is found but then you get
a black screen saying "Connection Lost" in that case the only thing you can do is waiting for me to restart the server, which might take a few hours.

Re: Survive! version 0.55 updated / online team survival game - 08/10/09 20:47

You should kill your server.

Re: Survive! version 0.55 updated / online team survival game - 08/10/09 22:21

Yeah ha smile got wave 9 with 87479 points ;-)

And please build the delete boxes function. Lsat time we build some boxes onto other, so we don't saw the enemy's...
Posted By: Germanunkol

Re: Survive! version 0.55 updated / online team survival game - 08/10/09 23:17

I would also like to be able to jump somehow... over the boxes, that is.
I found it easier to just run away from the monsters than to stay inside the spawn area where they come from all sides...
Then again, I was alone...
Posted By: Martek

Re: Survive! version 0.55 updated / online team survival game - 08/11/09 10:11

And maybe a highscore for your online server.
(last game: wave 9, score ca. 128000)

Re: Survive! version 0.55 updated / online team survival game - 08/11/09 17:42

the game makes a lot of fun.

I would could if you could make headshots. And if one player joins later he shouln't start with the pistol. Instead give him a weapon suitable for the current wave.
Posted By: SchokoKeks

Re: Survive! version 0.55 updated / online team survival game - 08/11/09 17:42

it looks like the 100% CPU-utilization of 3DGS killed the server frown

even worse: I'm currently not at home, so i can't repair it. lets just hope it doesn't catch fire, as I can not pull the power cable either :P In the meantime, I'm trying to have a replacement server online by tomorrow. I'll keep you updated!

EDIT: server back online!
currently using my laptop as server, that should work. please report of you get disconnects more or less frequent.
Posted By: Germanunkol

Re: Survive! version 0.55 updated / online team survival game - 08/11/09 19:29

37000 points.
uhrwerk beat me though, with around 40 000

... -.-

I'd like the game more if it was funnier... no ego-shooter and not so brutal, but the same idea, it would be real fun. the gameplay's already very good though, and that was only personal taste...

Well done!

Edit: we should make more games like this: small and fun and with mutliplayer-capability.
many people have played this game by now... and it's only been showcased for a few days...

something over 95000 points. laugh

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/12/09 11:01

I tested it today (alone).
Before extending the game, I would improve the weapon handling. The weapons feel completly unnatural.
The movement was mostly ok, but sometimes I had some bad lags (played in austria, 2 Mbit).

Overall: Nice start, cool idea but still a lot of room for improvement smile

Re: Survive! version 0.5 release / online team survival game - 08/12/09 11:20

Hey,
the idea of the game is very good!

Ideas:
- A kind of grid in the build-mode
- Delete boxes in the build-mode
- Build stationary machine gun in build-mode
- Box gravity
- Different enemy classes
- Some player classes
--> Soldier
--> Medic
--> ...
- Build a map to see other players
- Join the servers out of the game and not with this starter-program

I think the game will be a very cool shooter!

Survive! future plans - 08/12/09 13:02

wow, i had never expected that much feedback in such a short time! thank you all for testing! this sure is a great motivation to continue working.

I won't be able to work in it for the next week, but i'm currently deciding what to add into the next version V0.6:

- jumping (over crates)
- dead enemies sometimes drop powerups (health, "quad damage", maybe sentry guns, grenades or airstrikes)
- weapon supply droped somewhere in the level, players have to pick them up, newly joined players can get them too
- deleting own crates in build mode
- simple gravity for boxes
- 1 or 2 new weapons
- change to version 7.80, traffic can be reduced a lot with "NOSEND_Z"
- hopefully some better sound effects
- and of course lots of bugfixing

I'm currently thinking about what could be done to make the game less brutal and more funny. When i began the game, I wanted a horror survival theme, and had a different level that was pretty dark, but it didn't work out. I then changed it to a more "serious sam"-like gameplay.

what is not going to be included, at least for the next versions:
- player classes (soldier, medic etc). this is not team fortress
- different hit zones for enemies. I won't use polygon-exact shooting on the enemies, because their animations are not synchronised with the server (in fact, the server doesn't play any animations)
- removing starter.exe and putting all options ingame.

because there is a lot to do, it'll take 2-3 weeks to finish V0.6.

EDIT: I checked the server log, and the current record is held by:
Germanunkel: 95352 Points
Posted By: darkinferno

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/12/09 13:15

i keep losing connection so i cant go at the high score.. u get away germanunkol..... for now grin
Posted By: Germanunkol

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/12/09 14:53

Ha! go me grin

I must admit though that the guys playing with me would've gotten more points if they hadn't dropped out. They joined again afterwards, but then their score was reset...

Yes, serious sam sounds like a fun style for a game like this tongue

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/13/09 08:02

This in the code should be improved:

-make the turnspeed timeindepentednt
(time_factor in the player.pan rotation)

-use a camera.arc of 80 to 90, its just the standard currently,
wich does not fit for shooters.

-i could see me own playermodel when walking backwards,
try to make it invisible
Posted By: SchokoKeks

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/13/09 10:07

Quote:
-make the turnspeed timeindepentednt

I always thought that the movement of the mouse was the only thing that should be left dependend on the frame rate.
thanks for the other code suggestions. the weapon is also a bit dependent on the framerate, bad programming on my side.

I'd like to join you tonight, too, but i got no computer that can run the game fluently right now.

EDIT: sorry martek, your 12k points might as well be the record, but i don't save the log files. i only verified the record of germanunkel because it looked really high for me and it was the highest number that had been posted.

Posted By: Damocles_

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/13/09 11:09

I ran the game on a very slow PC, so there is a noticable
reduction in the turnspeed in high-FPS consuming views given the
same mouse-speed input.
The goal should be to have the same angle per second rotation
no matter how the FPS are.

You might not have noticed it on a fast PC with FPSMax on,
as this automatically creates steady framerates.
Posted By: Scorpion

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/13/09 11:53

in the gamestudio manual they use mouse_force without multiplied time_step...
Posted By: Damocles_

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/13/09 11:56

Well, and the manual is using it simpy wrong,
as it is not framerate independent.
Its just a short code-snipplet to show how the vector
works.

@schokokeks:
Sorry for using this thread for this highscore talking
Posted By: SchokoKeks

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/13/09 20:43

ok, new highscore is:

martek: 152579 Points

that must have taken some time! please, only post your highscores if you get a higher one that this wink and btw, sometimes the game is harder and sometimes easier, because the more players are on the server, the stronger the monsters get. combine that with this bug and the monsters get harder the longer the server stays online, until it's full forever. the next version will maybe have a display that tells you how many players the server thinks there are.

i just got another idea:
what do you think of a version 0.56 that switches to A7.80 public beta and fixes a few bugs? i know that you'd rather see new features, but this would fix many of the "connection losts"
Posted By: MasterQ32

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/13/09 21:27

gut idea!
i would port it to lite-c, because its very powerfull and you can do some things you're not able to do in c-script.
The map will be very easy in lite-c, because every player can create a panel for himself and show his position with this.

Looks like really fun game laugh

I'll have to play it tonigh , that's sure !

I don't know multiplayer programing, it is possible 8 people simultaneously.
It is possible to program several teams of 8 players playing in the server ?
Each team running is own level ?
Posted By: SchokoKeks

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/14/09 13:40

ok, the new version is out, here are the changes:

Changes from v 0.55 to 0.56
- changed to A7.80 Beta engine
- crates can be deleted with right-click
- disconnects are partly ignored
- sound volume tweaked
- round restart when last player leaves in build phase

@ratchet:
thats theoretically possible, but:
- there have never been more then 4 or 5 ppl playing at the same time
- the servers connection is to slow for that
- I don't know if the "-port" commando really works cause I'd have to start several instances of the server application

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/14/09 17:47

Ok, there is a big bug now that the game is often stuck and no enemies will be spawned in new rounds sometimes. thats really annoying as all players have to rejoin. I have no idea why this happens as i haven't touched the spawn code, but I'll look into it. sorry for that, can't test the game as good as i should be testing it. the good news is that this is probably a server only bug and i might not have to release a new version again.

EDIT: server now updated, see below

Re: Survive! future plans - 08/14/09 18:32

Great game i like it a lot laugh

The textures and shadows reminds me No More Heores.

Ok here are some ideas taken from Killzone 2 FPS and others,
and some MMorpg

- use left mouse to Zoom in without begin able to walk or run like oether FPS games
- include granades : why not flash grenades to immobilise ennemies some time
- when using shotgun and firing near ennemies : all of them should receive damage : it's perhaps the case already ?
- already said : but jumb would be cool : this way some could
stay in the defense place while others would go outside
- includ of potions or medkits ( 4 for each player : to use in
a round )
- include devil powers : call of aerial strike
- possiblity to call drones (limited in nuymber) to fight

- bonus to choose each new round :
for example a difficult choice
- a pack of crates to recreate your defense
- some weapons and medic packs
reconstruct your base defense
- super weapon with good amount of ammo

Mix with mmo elements or COD4 perks :
4 slots for each player : each slot would be a super ability :
-More life
-Damage increased
-strike through several ennemies

Like in Killzone 2 or MMorpg some
powers that would regenerate after some time
that can be used again
-Call aerial strike
-Call drones to fight (star wars like for fun)
-Revive a fallen Partner
-a zone frozen power : all ennemies would take some damage and would be frozen some time.

Each of us could make it's own soldier for lot more fun on the battle laugh
I don't know if it's difficult to do a system like in COD4 :
With username , store it's password, he could level up and gain new abilities choices and powers and it would be definitively saved on the server !

I know it's lot of porgramming and work , that's just ideas.
Your game is great , personnaly i just think for players to keep playing they would need these sort of bonus and personnalisation to bring the more fun possible.

Anyway i really like a lot your game.
Any thought on making a tutorial on making a game like yours ?
Keep it up, you have a really fun game, a great start !

the record is confirmed:

Re: Survival! server update - 08/15/09 12:30

I've just updated the server again, please post if it still still happens.

some players had the impression that this had something to do with players joining, in that case you can't notice it on a LAN server.
I really have no clue about it, I've read the spawn code a hundred times now.

Re: Survival! server update - 08/15/09 12:35

Maybe it's just me, but I am now having the following errors:

1. I cannot move after the building phase.
2. I left the game now about 5 times, and each time I return, the player models aren't removed, so tehre are 5 little soldiers standing around.
3. No enemies.

Rest works.

EDIT: and to answer: I have several project folders for that.

1. this bug only appears when several ppl join and fight at the same time
2. for this week, I'm not at home, so I only have a laptop here that is too slow for really playing the game. I only get 5 to 10 fps, and the server thats running at the same time on this machine does also get problems. so i can't even think of starting another server or maybe several clients on here
3. I don't know if it is possible to run several -sv server apps on one machine, but i'll be testing that.
EDIT: it is possible through "-port" command

Re: Survival! server update - 08/18/09 14:35

thanks for that insight, dark samurai

I have some bad news:
firstly, the server won't be online for the rest of the day, because I'm traveling.
secondly, I'll try to convert the project to lite-C becaue jcl stated that he'd advise against programming an online game in c-script. i guess the new features won't be added and the mp-system isn't really tested or used in c-script for the current and future updates.
third: I will be moving soon, so I won't have as much time for the game as I would hope to have.
so just be a little patient.

Survival! Community help needed - 09/06/09 20:43

just wanted to give you a small update:

I'm done porting the game to lite-c, but I hardly have time to work on the new features for now. additionally, I'm going to take down the server because I'll be moving in 2 weeks and I don't know when I'll have internet in my new apartment. (yes, the server runs over a home internet connection)

since this game got quite a lot of response, I'm hoping for some community help. I still need a lot of sounds and some artwork. If you have anything that could be used for things in the following list, please PM me and include information about the source and copyright.

- box hit sound
- flesh hit sound
- player has hurt sound (no screams please)
- uzi sound (i only have a muffled one)
- grenade model and explosion sound
- good quality generic power-up, to be skinned for the different types

So what do you get for helping? The game will progress faster and you'll be named in the credits (although they are only in the readme file).
Thank you all!

My homeserver broke down, I don't know why, but it doesn't work right now. I also hardly have time to do anything (on this project), but i wanted to do some programming this weekend, add one or two powerups and then get the server ready and do a new release. Re: Survival! server update - 11/04/09 21:12

I'm sorry to announce that the lite-c conversion didn't work out. more and more glitches and bugs appear every day! The project is frozen for now, until i have the time and motivation to continue.

but there are good news: I'm working on a new project, again a proof that multiplayer games are very well possible with 3dgs. This time I'm using ANet, not the build in network engine.

additionally, i got my homeserver back online, so
the gameserver for version 0.57 is back online!

you can download this version in the first post. the server will run as long as i haven't released my new prototype.

so long,

i think you misunderstood me. the new project has nothing do to with this version, except for it also being a multiplayer game. it's not going to be an FPS, thats all i'm going to say to avoid flame wars and the usual "I knew it" when i'll annouce that that project will be canceled, too wink

ANet is not free, but i'm thinking about buying it, if everything goes all right. the 4 player limit of the demo might be enough for a small public test.

Re: Survival! server update - 11/09/09 11:43

because a user requested it, I'm going to release the old c-script sourcecode so you can try to learn from it or continue the game. I'm not going to include the assets, because some of them aren't free and I'm not allowed to distribute them (except for releases of games, that is). The code is going to be free for any usage you'd like, including commercial usage.

The code is hardly commented, but I'm going to write a short "Guide to Code" which will describe the most important functions and the startup and connection initialization. I think I'll be done by tuesday or friday.

I tryed the game seemed fun so far but I kept getting bothered by one thing. I was running game in window 640x480. My mouse hand showed up over the game so I got confused between using mouse hand verses the cross hair to aim and shoot. I also had problem where i had to move my hand off the window to move the crosshair over target but then when i left click mouse to fire the gun the whole game was no longer the focus and I activated another program running in another window in the background.

Re: Survive! version 0.57 update / online team survival game - 12/05/09 23:12

Hi, I'm happy you like the game!
About window mode: What you describe is how every 1st person game made with the 3d gamestudio behaves in window mode. The only way to avoid that is to play in full screen mode, simply check the 'Full screen' option in the starter.

Additionally, I'm no longer working on the game, as you might have read. The server will go offline soon, when I'll need it for my new project. That will probably be February 2010, maybe earlier.

Okay, just tried out the game after a longer time, the server has been running for weeks, and now there are synchronizing issues! Entitys don't have the same position on server and client, although they are synchronized via dplay_entrate!

Another good reason for my switch to ANet for future projects, I just hope it does not have such problems.

Re: Survive! version 0.57 update / online team survival game - 12/23/09 22:06

The game has interesting gameplay. I really liked it- today we played 5 players each with ping about 80. But when my friend playing from Canada joined he had ping about 230 and the max. players were limited to 2. When third player try to join there is only a black screen. Maybe you must increase the max. ping capacity of the server?

Btw I'm looking forward for the next version of the game!
Posted By: SchokoKeks

Re: Survive! version 0.57 update / online team survival game - 12/24/09 03:39

hi mental, great to hear that you like the game and that it's still being played! I didn't expect that.

what you describe is an engine bug i've already reported, but it never got confirmed by conitec. max players is always 8 players, but sometimes the server does not decrease the player count when a player leaves. that might be related to a high ping. After you had played several rounds and a lot of players had joined and left and joined again, the server had 6 "phantom" players on it, and thus there was only room for 2 other player. btw the enemies get stronger the more players there are on, so it must have been incredibly hard when only 2 of you could actually joined. I manually restart the server when i notice that it has this problem, but I'm only checking a few times a week.

anyway, the game is no longer being developed, so there won't be a new version soon. I thought about converting it to the ANet multiplayer plugin, but I'm not sure if that wouldn't be too hard. you could make a new version by yourself, because I've released the sourcecode .

Hi im new here. I like your game, it was prety tense near the end. I was runing around with 1 health left hoping for a health pack to drop lol. Anyway that minotaur thing killed me, i had about 30 000 points. No bug expirienced, only the high ping problem at the begining, but it went away after a minute or two.

Re: Survive! version 0.57 update / online team survival game - 12/30/10 14:44

Just dug out this thread to make a short announcement:

I have continued to work on Survive! I'm doing a rewrite in lite-C and with Anet multiplayer, so I can get rid of all the bugs that effectively stopped the development a year ago. Not sure if they were fixed in the native multiplayer, but I'm not keen on trying out. Also, I'm still using A7.

There will be changes in the gameplay: I'm going to remove the build-phase, you'll now be able to build from the first-person-perspective during the rounds. New build crates and reenforcements will be delivered via parachute. I'm going to rebalance everything so that monsters will take less hits to kill. Also I'm planning different enemy AI types, some will have a ranged attack so it'll be more important to build shelter. I've read through this thread and there are a lot more interesting suggestions I'm considering to implement.

Progress so far: I've created a completely new player movement script that is much more lag free than the old and reacts without delay. Jumping is finally possible, too! It'll take at least 2 more weeks to get everything on the level of the old version.

Re: Survive! version 0.57 update / online team survival game - 01/12/11 15:40

Here's a little update to show you I've been working hard:

On the first screenshot you see a player carrying a box. The new placement system works, though i might tweak it a little bit later on. Animations are missing, maybe I'll exchange the player model sometime in the future. The other screenshots prove that jumping is now finally possible, too! You can also see the new weapon models, some of you might recognize them as I haven't created them myself but bought then.
The next task will be to improve the enemies. In the old versions, you had to hit them a dozen times to kill them, they just overrun you in numbers. In this version, they'll less robust but smarter. There will be "jumper" who can jump over crates to hunt you and "smasher" who will destroy crates within seconds, so you'll have have to be on the watch all the time. Also, ranged attackers will be able to cast fireballs on your defences.

To sum it up, it'll be awesome. I'm aiming to release a first version 0.6 in a week, but seeing the usual delay that my releases have it might even take a month grin

Re: Survive! version 0.57 update / online team survival game - 01/12/11 16:26

To be honest, its a very small and fun game so i think you should try to do more graphically, not that you NEED to but could make it something that appeals to more than just the GS community, dont think it'd need alot of work, few grass models, terrain shader, some free rock and tree models in the background.. and it'd be done...

i really think you could do a better job positioning the weapons, guns are the stars in a gungame.. dont just tack them on the screen because you need a gun model, is it me or you tried to rotate the model to look to the center of the screen? if so, i really dont think you need to do that if you had positioned the weapon ok..

you should atleast aim for this:

FOV is currently at 85, the picture were taken in 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. I'll try to play around with it, maybe 90 is better.

Yes, the weapon models are rotated a bit, I'll tweak their position. About the graphics.. I'll keep them at their current state until I got the gameplay right. I'll be getting new 2d art and a menu system, that will help a bit to make the game look more appealing for the next beta versions.

UT is NOT 90. It`s 75 by default on 16:10 and 70 on 4:3.

This would be 90 (UT3). No game looks like this by default because it`s totally unrealistic and strange.

your screens look MUCH better now, weapon still seem a bit small and pistol is a bit far but much better screens and i know you should focus on gameplay, the graphics comment was just so it may appeal to nonGS members, if this surpasses the last game then it should be fine wink lets hope it does laugh hope u get the shooting done right, that in itself can make/break the game
