Nice mechanics.
Works smooth and looks good.
Do you use your custom collision system?
Is the level block or modelbased?
I would place the controls a bit differently though.
(Cursor up for jump, and space for any special action.)
best is to have several keys mirror the controls.
So everone can use the keys whichever he likes.
And I would reduce the gravity a bit, and/or slow down the speed
to keep it more casual.
Little glitch:
The jump-force should stop when hitting a (moving) block above,
Else the player sticks to the roof a short time.
Posted By: JibbSmart
Re: superuli - 03/04/11 23:21
Gravity seems to still build up when the player is on blocks (if you step off the player falls very quickly, but if you jump the player falls more slowly).
Sometimes when I died I couldn't jump anymore.
Besides those things, it's quite solid.
Thanks for the distraction

Fun demo

nice to see my wad comes in handy

Re: superuli - 03/05/11 01:11
It's very nice overall. I really like it. Two minor glitches: Once you jumped into the abbys and the game resets you to the starting point you can't jump anymore and the game does not even react on escape or alt and f4.
I'm always falling into the abyss - I'm too bad in playing mario-like jump'n'runs!
One thing I noticed: when I jump as far as I can at the sand (Weitsprung) the second time, then the game crashes.

Re: superuli - 03/05/11 07:08
Thanx for your reply.
I'll noticed the things you noted (and some more

) and i will change them.
(If you hang please press F12 to quit the game)
[edit]: sorry i forgot to answer the questions:Q:Do you use your custom collision system?
A: I use the inbuilt collision system but it takes eones to figure out a good balance - and it's still not finished (there is a BIG grown Uli version making some problems

)
Q:Is the level block or modelbased?
Both (and i once again hate the shadow system of gs).
[edit2] now brainstorming (please help with cretive ideas!)What would YOU add to the game and do you have probably some free models (enemies, objects) that fit to the game?
That would help and makes you a place in the credits...
My next steps are: fix bugs, add crashing blocks (like the stones in Mario) and a boss at the end of each level.

So great!))) I'm impressed! Have to say, that this is best mario killer I've ever played!)))
I think new link leads to old version, or am I wrong? There is no level that I see on last screen.

New update!
I changed the little enemies to a new texture (guess what from

)
And now there is an online highscore for the long jump challenge (more highscores if levels came up...)*
only if connected to internet of causeAnd thanx for the kind words!

Really cool demo! Great work mercuryus!
Playing your demo really comes back memories of the old-good Nintendo days

Re: superuli - 03/06/11 16:34
Looks great, but I don't really get where to go on level

Even tried to inter pipes (like in Mario), but no luck.

Re: superuli - 03/06/11 17:21
I had a lot of fun playing. is there a way to beat the test level? it seemed to go in circles. maybe i missed something. anyways keep it up.
EDIT - Got The High Score in The long Jump!!!
Posted By: Anonymous
Re: superuli - 03/06/11 18:17
The testlevel is only to proove the objects & scripts - it has no end or clue.
I will try to create a real level (an easy one first

) the next days.
@msmith2468: congrats! did you a double jump?
[edit] oops - I see you where beaten

yes i used the double jump.
it took me about a hundred tries but im #1 again

Re: superuli - 03/06/11 22:14
Excellent tech demo though I've found 3 bugs... don't hate me

1) The score when it rounds upwards doesn't use the same rounding when displaying the distance as you can see by this

2) Hopefully the picture will give away the other bug.
If you land facing right, then jump again holding right and keep repeating it won't calculate your distance until you're facing left or you just jump with no other keys (I think...)
3) The demo crashes if you jump off the edge now after it's calculated your distance. If you're using method bug 2 it will restart as it did in previous version

Re: superuli - 03/06/11 23:41
If u press both left and right keys, when player will move in slow-motion mode

EDIT: BTW how to preform double jump?

Re: superuli - 03/07/11 07:33
@MrGuest: cool bug

- thanx for the reply and bug reports: I'll fix this soon.
Doublejump: jump and then jump again right after you reach the ground (you have ~0.5 sec).
You can hear uli shout a little louder then. And he jumps (a little) higher then.
After fixing the bugs the highscores will be reset...

Re: superuli - 03/08/11 17:02
Hi there!
Bugs are fixed and online highscore is reset.
Now i'm on a first (real) level...
Posted By: Anonymous
Re: superuli - 03/08/11 20:22
*note (while creating the first real level)* I'm following damocles_ idea to reduce the walking/running speed and the jump forces for a better handling.
I also shrink the blocks (to original "mario" size) - it's a better gameplay!

Re: superuli - 03/09/11 00:16
Good fix, found 2 new bugs but can't screen shot them as you've disabled window mode
1) on the highscore i jumped exactly 5 meters and showed up as just "5" rather than "5.000"
2) his hair changed colour with black stripes in when jumping under the first set of blocks in the test level to get the coins
other than that plays really well
Posted By: Anonymous
Re: superuli - 03/09/11 05:08
the first thing is easy - will be fixed.
the second is the awefull shadow system on 3dgs.
Don't know why. the player entity has the CAST flag set.
I will see if i can figure out whats the problem here.
I hope the first world (with some levels) will be get ready next weekend...

Re: superuli - 03/09/11 16:45
Really good start

Like alrady said , you need to change the method of control
of the character !
You'll have to later improve the textures of your level blocks ! Some are too much brighter like wall blocks , and
the blocks with stars are too much dark !
Try to make some global brightness for all textures of blocks !
Keep it up !

Re: superuli - 03/09/11 21:54
*sight* ...Yes ... Nintendo ... 100's of designer, artists and coder (with a superbe engine a lot of time and ca$h) ... against me

(with this rotten 3dgs

)
But I uploaded a new version with several changes.
* motion behavior has changes a bit (slower)
(online highscores reset)* the first level of the first world is done
* inworld level change (sublevels e.g. by tubes, teleporters)
* user defined control settings (and saving/loading of cause)
* 3 big coins per level to search for
* and - uhh yes - the level end flag
beta testers welcome - please report bugs/suggestions/ideas/...

Re: superuli - 03/10/11 03:31
very nice first level. i liked it a lot. the second tube world was hard and i kept dieing took me about 7 tries before i got it. but it was well layed out. perhaps a high score table for the level? that would make things interesting

keep it up
*EDIT - how bout a mushroom to make uli grow?
Posted By: Anonymous
Re: superuli - 03/10/11 06:19
There is a highscore for/after each world planned.
Before i implement it i need the scoring system (after each level).
At the end of each world (~3-5 level) with a boss enemy in the last level the total world scoring will be send to a online highscore.
with the second sublevel i wanted to introduce the cool 3D-level-rotation. But it's going to confuse the player (not only you

- maybe I'll make this 3D-level-rotation later in the second level and more easy for the first step?! I have to wait for the reply of my beta testers...
"how bout a mushroom to make uli grow?": yes that's already implemented (and several other enemies, objects (keys), moves for uli (climb, swim, ...), etc. (but I don't want to show all these things in the first techdemo)

Just an idea: when he dies, let him fall down a bit more closer, so he doesnt hide within the terrein, but falls out of the screen :)(MArio like)

I like it a lot it is looking good. i love the cloud in the second sub-level. my only complaint is that when u die or finish a sub-level everything goes back to its original state. i can get a better score by dieing and replaying the level then doing it in 1 life. just a thought

Re: superuli - 03/13/11 23:58
yes - the scoring (in fact of reloading the whole level/with objects) is a bad.
will work on it...
thanx!

Re: superuli - 03/16/11 09:58
Change of concept & art.Meanwhile I created a bunch of enemies, moving platforms, goods, sounds, testlevel, ...
...and decided to use the coding but not the "mario" like style.
To become separated (from the big antetype MARIO) and more original I decided to eliminate ALL parts of nintendo style and replace them with other shapes , textures & models.
The textures will become more technical, the enemies more robotic & alienlike. The goods to collect will also change - depending on the storyline (yes - ther now is a storyline for the game)
So the idea was born to send SUPERULI to space.SUPERULI now becomes a mixture from MARIO, Cammander Keen, Roger Wilco and Flash Gordon to save the earth.
First screens the next days... - stay tuned...
[edit]... here's SUPER_SPACE_ULI (with his jetpack):

will he have a Jetpack for higher jumps?
Posted By: Anonymous
Re: superuli - 03/16/11 14:01
He can fly (for a while) with the jetpack.
There are bottles to select in the levels for recharge the jetpack.
The idea of how to use the jetpack is like in the atari game

Here's the story so far:Aliens where seen on moon.
The scientists have observed the aliens are building a huge laser canon and it's pointed to the earth.
They must plan to destroy the human mankind!
There is just one hero to prevent this: SUPERULI!

SUPERULI jumps in his (selfconstructed) space shuttle and proceed to the moon.
Right after landing on the moon he's getting attacted from these aliens.
But SUPERULI proceeds to the alien base and further on to... (but thats part of the game

)

I had less time these days but did a bit new stuff:
- 2 new levels
- new actions (collect&place dynamit to destroy walls&enemies)
- a little composing for the level music
- new objects (e.g. an enemy creator, doors, switches (for switched objects[lift/door])
I'll post new screens the next days...

Re: superuli - 04/03/11 08:14
Why moon has same gravity as earth? And I think you should place bricks a bit higher above the ground.
Looks like player got stuck at 1:47 after planting dynamite. Is that a bug?
Other ways looks great.
Posted By: Anonymous
Re: superuli - 04/03/11 10:00
SUPERULI har a SUPERGRIVITY suit so he can jump like on earth.
The dynamite stuck is indeed a bug.
Posted By: msmith2468
Re: superuli - 04/03/11 16:13
it looks good. i like The dynamite. i feel like it would be more rewarding for the player if you could fly the space ship. instead of just walking under the space ship and being teleported to the moon.
how bout the ship blasts off. it does not even have to turn or be controllable just make it blast off with some flames untill it goes off the screen and have the next level start with the ship landing and uli jumps out. i feel like that would be more rewarding. just a thought

over all looks really good and i like the goodies like the star, brakeable boxes invisible boxes, dynamite..... keep it up
Posted By: Anonymous
Re: superuli - 04/04/11 05:57
The ship will be replaced (better texture and a window).
If SUPERULI enter the ship his head will be seen through the window.
Then the level selection menu appear.
After selecting the level the ship blasts off...
...and lands (in the first world, first level. Later level there will be no landing sequence).
Thanx for your (all) nice comments.
I really like this project because after set up the basic mechanics the new ideas (objects, interaction, enemies, levels, music, ...) just can be added - it grows and grows [too slow for me

but time's my enemy -
and also for SUPERULI
].

Re: superuli - 10/04/11 05:55
SUPERULI goes adventure style...
This weekend i had the idea to make SUPERULI more adventure like.
SUPERULI will need tools (tools, keys, object parts, ...) to solve levels.
For example SUPERULI will need a battery and a screwdriver to take of to the moon with his rocket...
Posted By: HeelX
Re: superuli - 10/04/11 08:19
You should rename it to Ullrich Mac Gyver, since I have my doubts that you can fly to the moon with a screwdriver and a battery
Btw, the lightning is horrible and what is that black square on the moon?
Posted By: Anonymous
Re: superuli - 10/04/11 10:18
Good idea! UliMacGyver (but Mac Gyver is already registered

) - maybe mcGuli, or just Guli (the channel digger)
Leveldesign never was my favorite (as you can see) so it will take some time to get better results without help.
The black square is the monolith from "2001 odyssee im weltraum".
Looks like it appers on the moon? *haha*
