Nomal maping Objects? - 04/14/06 16:08

Hi,

iam tyring to apply a normal map to my player model.
I used a Tutorial that says is have to us an alpha map with the first texture of the model and an normal map as second.
I folloed the tutorial step by step, 3 times now but within the game, my moddel allways is 50%transparent! I tryed to change the Transparency of the alpha map, but no matter what nummber i use, ist is alwys 50% transparend! The normal map effect can be seen, but with transparency.
Can anyone help !?

whatīs your 3dgs version/edition? "50% transparent" sounds like you use a version that does not support shaders (standard/extra).

i just startet again with GS after a time off.
Do u think ist just a version problem? Because my normal mapping on the level textures works just fine

depends on the shader you use. 6.22 is a DX8 version, maybe the shader is coded for dx9. furthermore, most level block "shaders" are FFEs, that means no "real" shaders, they do not require ps/vs, and are normally a lot slower. so which shader do you use? which c-script code?

PS: a bit suspicious, having 6.22 pro and just started with 3dgs (after a short time off, though), donīt you think? so donīt wonder about Christof84... was my first intention, too.

There are people how must go to work, and dont live for GS, so sorry that not everyone is "up to date"
all i wanted, was some help and what do i get!?
If u wanna Hunt down Software Pirates, then try in the next school and you will find something.
An i bet u 2 have ( if not GS ) software u have not payed for, and i dont mean Shaerware.

i did not wanted to start a flame war, i tried to explain what cristof meant, therefor i wrote it under "PS". if youīd read the text above "PS", which is the real post, you could figure out that i answered related to your question and offered my help in case you post the codes.

Sorry for Exploding that way, but i hate it to hear those stupide things! I also own 3d Studio max an in every damm Forum is one idiot, that writes such [censored].
Is it a shame to own Legal Software?
So, dont be angry its just nerving me.
Thanx for the help.

It isn't a shame to own legal software it's just, 9 times out of 10, people who have problems with their 6.2 Pro software are not legal owners (more like 98 out of 100).

I would totally recommend update your engine to 6.31. It's free, it's quick, and there are a *lot* of fixes that will make your experience much nicer.

So i updated my GS but still have the same Problem! 50% transparency! I think it is something little i did wrong. Somthing with the alpha map probebly.
Why do i need an alpha map? An Alphamap is usually used to make somthing transparent, right! BUT the tutorial says i should make a top texture with an alpha channle and an Normal map Texture as bottom map! In 3ds max i need a texture and a normal map, thats all. So why do i need the Alpha channel in the top map for GS???

When an entity has an alphamap it's transparent flag is automaticly set by the engine. Just put 'my.transparent = off;' in the action of the entity.

BTW, I think this is a stupid way of handling alphamaps by the engine.

Re: Nomal maping Objects? - 04/15/06 14:24

i do not know wherefor the shader uses the alphamap in entSkin1 without having seen one line of your code, but normally it controls the specular value (spec map). if so, just as a test, try not to use an alpha channel, then the model should appear solid but totally glossy. if even this does not work, we really need the fx file/c-script code to help you.
