So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/12/14 01:33
It's too bad, too.
I just decided to pop in and see what was going on. I used to be around a lot years ago, can't even remember the old name I used to use. Actually, I think I had two previous names.
This is the engine that opened up the possibilities for game development for me. I remember when the community was vibrant. I remember when Gamestudio made me excited. Years ago it was revolutionary. Now, it seems, to has been left behind.
It really is too bad.

I feel like i am visiting a relative (Gamestudio) at the hospital (opserver.de) every day waiting for them to die.

not dead, it is rather undead!
in my case it is becoming very frustrating to develop a long term project I'm working on, while UE4 is whispering in my ears "come with me"...

So how did we get to this point?

Where is the forecast page?

Re: So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/13/14 12:15
@Stratego:
probably they missed investing more into the engine development when it was popular enough and could allow it, or attract investors to make the company bigger, and later they could not do it when less income came from 3dgs, thus had to work on other projects.
especially when unity3d appeared. I personally selected 3dgs over unity3d when A7 was around A7.81 because it was and is still better for my purposes, and A7 commercial seemed to be more achievable that unity3d pro as a hobbyist.
the new WED (announced 3 years ago) could be a great escape, but it was stopped one and a half year ago, similarly to Android support.
and today you have many more attracting choices if a game engine is needed.

Re: So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/16/14 01:11
Its only dead if you don't use it...I still think Gamestudio is the most stable, flexible and easy-to-use engine out there, and not expensive either.
I do think though it would be nice if they made the Pro-only features available to lower version owners at some point.

Re: So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/16/14 06:01
...but the bugs, lack of features, missing updates and dead community make it as unattractive as fuck.
Also I don't really think Acknex is very flexible but that might just be my point of view.
Anyway, it still is a good engine and fun to work with, but it could be a lot better.
btw. we had this would-could conversation a hundred times by now... It's senseless, it doesn't tell them anything they don't know. If it does anything, it motivates jcl&friends to stop development and let 3dgs die.

Re: So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/16/14 14:55
Don't worry. We still use Acknex for the AckCons

Re: So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/17/14 08:17
The engine itself is still fine for game creation, only its development is stopped. Don't worry, I'm making my RTS game with 3gds, and hopefully find no more crazy bugs enforcing me to switch... And until new WED is done, you have MapBuilder

Re: So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/19/14 09:32
isn't jcl like 60 now? when there was a photo with doug and marco a few years ago (at game developers conference or something like that) he was in his mid 50s if i remember correctly.
so isn't it more likely that he will retire before he has time again for gamestudio? or maybe he has more time for it as a hobby once he is retired?

Re: So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/19/14 12:34
My rough guess is that Acknex always was like a hobby project for Conitec.

Re: So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/22/14 02:26
Yeah well the engine isn't important to Conitec anymore. I don't like the way JCL is handling this but it's his company, so he can do whatever he likes. I always supported the Acknex engine; though that game project of him and stupid Zorro, I didn't like one bit.
The community is gone too. Sure still many people from the past are around (like me), but it's almost gone now. We're all getting older just like JCL. I'm not angry at him and wish him all the best and hope he will make a fortune on day trading with Zorro.
I left when Doug left Conitec. I knew it was time to move on and as many others went with Unity. ATM i'm using Unity and GameMaker for 2d projects.
Maybe JCL will surprise us and release something, but I think it is hard for him to tell his hobby project is dead. And we're on our own? I don't know. I have had many good times with this engine and it helped me move to better things. So in that perspective. Thank you.

He was born in 1957.
He was born in 1957 .. so he is now 57... what a coincidence!

HeelX destroyed my post.
Yeah well the engine isn't important to Conitec anymore.
You mean oP Group. The engine was acquired by oP Group in 2007. As far as I know, Conitec only programmed the new WED, which isn't released yet.
He was born in 1957.

Re: So Gamestudio is finally dead then, - 12/31/14 01:29
How could it be dead if jcl is still
interacting with the users and showing how valuable they are to him?
Thanks! We wish all Zorro users a happy and successful 2015!
No happy and successful 2015 for us! : (

When I take a look at the games developed with Gamestudio in the last years ...
Bielefeld 2010 - Infinite Lottery Adventures Bielefeld 2010 - Infinite Lottery Antistress Infinite Lottery Adventures II 3.D Infinite Typing Lottery ... then I can understand why JCL stopped developing his Game Engine.

I heard the Beamdog will release a new game soon, based on the Infinity Engine, which was used 21 years ago in Baldurs Gate
... so if they are using so old tech (OK, it was updated - but is still considered to be very old), then I guess I will make Gamestudio games until I am 50!
