Dexsoft, I am disappoint. The tractors don't have the regular amount of texture details frown

Re: DEXSOFT-Games: Industrial 6. Mining Facilities - 04/06/11 18:39

True, the texture work really isn't that great. It especially gets obvious HERE. Just some yellow color with some slight bumpy texture mixed in - apart from lacking any kind of dirty or "used" areas (I mean you call this "mining facility", not heavy gear showoff reel) it's not that great...

I'm also dissapointed about that big elevator tower building. You did this great model where you even modeled every step of the stairs and then use pretty much two simple big blocks for the entire building? It feels like Half-Life 1 level of detail meets Crysis... wink

It's not really a bad package you created there you really feel where the final polish is missing though...

Personally I like these models. You can easily make dirt on textures if you want older machine. Reference images of original models were also very clean and Frank made them with high accurasy.
But hey, if you are disappointed we will try on next pack to be better laugh

I've got to agree with everyone else on this one these textures aren't up to your usual standard.

I don't understand why the reference images were so clean yet the wheels are covered in dirt?

This is one of the reasons we buy models... we can't make models and we can't make textures. Why not add a texture with dirt on and add it to the pack if it is so easy?

Yes dear grammar nazi, thats what I meant. Btw, you can gather some extra points by pointing out that "phtoshopped" is wrong too. Oh and eastern europe is russia (everything eastern of germany is the evil russian communist)

It seems Google is not your friend and has lied to you! Russia is mostly in Asia, not Europe. I've attached some pictures for you and some child learning activities to help you along your way. Hopefully you won't find them confusing as some do say Germany is Eastern European too!

There are links in the pictures for you so nasty Google won't get you lost again and don't worry, I won't be sending you an invoice. It's nice to help the struggling people of this world.

Seems us 'nerds' have our uses wink

Sorry for the off-topic DEX, still would like to see a dirtier texture grin

Re: DEXSOFT-Games: Industrial 6. Mining Facilities - 04/07/11 15:11

Well another off topic, because some people go off topic once again !

I think some people would ask for Next Gen textures with normal map and specular like that :

But in that case it would not be a pack but instead a Vehicle sold appart caus it would ask lot more work !

And all these models of the pack are not destined to be the main models of the game, i don't think people make a game where you will watch each model carefull during action, specially if it's a racing game or furious FPS laugh

That is because reality meets Half Life 1 and Crysis. Look, here is the original image of this building. I made it exactly like this:

The same counts for the front loader vehicle. I tried to be close to the reality. If our customers dont like the reality then we will do more scifi and fantasy in the future again wink
It is indeed easier to add more texture detail in a fictional area. Reality often does not have tons of details. That is why many artists prefer dirty and destroyed objects, they offer simply more details and character. But the reality with working machines that get cleaned after work is different:

It was really hard work and a new experiment to try to offer some vehicles in addition to our buildings. If it does not work out as a success we will just leave it in the future. It is too much work anyway for such bundled packages. I mean, in TurboSquid you will pay at least $100 for an untextured model of that kind.

We bundled 2 vehicles with a few buildings to make a more attractive pack. Many weeks of hard work went into it. But like always we will learn from the feedback and from the sales numbers. So don't worry.

Re: DEXSOFT-Games: Industrial 6. Mining Facilities - 04/07/11 19:44

Perhaps it seems some people would like less models (no Vehicles), but Next Gen with bigger texturew with lot of details and scratches in metal and paint ?

So for a highter price indeed laugh !

Why not proposing a vote Next Time on a theme pack that people would want ?

My point wasn't just about the design of the building itself but the level of detail difference. The building isn't totally flat yet still you decided to bake everything into the texture while putting countless little stairs on the top. It wouldn't really have made a big difference in terms of polygoncount but would be way more convincing in close ups which I guess was the whole point of it when looking at the overall level of detail...

Quote:

The geometries are just fine - I guess the main criticism here is that you textured them the catalogue way. We'd have expected something like this because they don't always stay brand new:

Ok - you got a point: You created a sort of convincing texture for the brand new condition. If you want to create a real mining scenario they just look a bit misplaced though especially as I think your main goal wasn't realism but a believable scenario which is what games are all about. Sure - those vehicles might look like that for a while but seeing such things drive around is an exception to the rule and would immediately point out when actually creating a mining scene destroying the immersion...

Re: DEXSOFT-Games: Industrial 6. Mining Facilities - 04/07/11 23:17

mining != dirty / rusty per se

(Because of security reasons and continuous exchange of the vehicle pool)

Re: DEXSOFT-Games: Industrial 6. Mining Facilities - 04/08/11 05:50

Toast: If you look again you will realize that they are not in "catalog-condition". I painted a dirt layer in Modo in the lower area especially around wheels. My goal was indeed to not overdo this. There are 2 reasons for it. I found mainly clean images and all mining venicles are white or yellow colored. These signal colors are there for security reasons. And they would not work if totally dirty. I will not discuss the second reason because it is not business between you and me.

Ratchet: From experience we can tell that people indeed love high quality packs. But they absolutely hate higher prices. So we always try to find a way to create best quality for a very low budget. And I think we are doing it perfectly so far.
There are of course a few bigger studios willing to pay more, but they are way smaller in numbers.

Re: DEXSOFT-Games: Industrial 6. Mining Facilities - 04/08/11 07:11

Can you people tell me what's so difficult in makin your own dirt overlay for the existing textures. Hey, the thing is completly mapped, so you only have to power up your photoshop or whatever and modify it.

Re: DEXSOFT-Games: Industrial 6. Mining Facilities - 04/08/11 08:48

@Machinery_Frank:
Well don't take things too seriously / personally here. It just seems that many people would have preferred a different type of condition for the textures. I guess just watch the general reception and see if there's an overall demand for the mentioned changes in the texture work or not...

In order to give you some heads up:
I really love your coal mine tower! Great job at recreating it... laugh

Re: DEXSOFT-Games: Industrial 6. Mining Facilities - 04/08/11 11:27

Frank: The reason as of why I didn't like the textures, is that it looks blurred. If it'd be sharper and had little details here and there (like your work usually has) I'd like it a lot more. laugh The "blurring" might also come from the shadows, but the texture still lacks something. I still like them, and I would add detail textures (etc.) myself if I needed these.

I agree that texture looks like a simple tiled texture applied
with some modifications on some parts.
It lacks details variations and some depth !

But for the price the pack is complete and cheap and like it have been said :

Can you people tell me what's so difficult in makin your own dirt overlay for the existing textures. Hey, the thing is completly mapped, so you only have to power up your photoshop or whatever and modify it.

I agree with that indeed, we can use a paint program and modify
all ourselves make your own normal map or baked normal map etc ...
