Spring 2007 contest question

Spring 2007 contest question - 01/03/07 17:38

Quote:

By submitting your game(s) you declare that:

- you have created all the submitted content, or you have the right to use it and distribute it freely;

- the game(s) can be given freely to all the engine users and / or made available for free at Conitec's websites, or as GameStudio demos.

I´ve to ask some questions:
-Can I resource (crypt) the gamefiles or must I publish them? Must it be open sourced?
-Can I sell an extended version of the game or must I give all rights to conitec?

Thanks,
fogman

1) You can resource the game files, provided that you also include the scripts in an uncompressed form. We want to learn from your scripts.
2) You can sell an extended version of your game, or even the same version of the game. Conitec has the right to post the demo on its sites (Acknex Unlimited, etc), but doesn't become the owner of your game.

Sorry to highjack the thread but it seems that your question has been answered and I don`t think it would be worth opening up another thread for my question but I realy asked myself where the borders of "casual games" are?
Would a lemmings or frogger clone be still a casual game?

thanks for hopefully not blameing me^^,

Lemmings or frogger would be ok.

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 01/05/07 18:26

Ah okay.. I was just a bit confused about the 'size' that such a casual game might have.
I read through the explanation of the term "casual game" written down on wikipedia which shows the problems in classifying a game as casual game so I thought I should better ask instead of simply starting to work^^!
Thanks for the answere.

Too bad because copying a casual game and releasing its clones will be so much likely, because esentially most of the games in this market are clones. We already
have an entry almost signed by some big causal game portals and we could have
entered the contest, but alas we would rather recover the prize money through a sequel of the same game we make using the same code.Anyway,no offence to the contest, but its a pity for us

I'll ask JCL about that and post his reply here.

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 01/30/07 13:05

You can use resources@acknex.net - read Aum61's "contest" section for more information.

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 02/16/07 04:20

Hmm would it be ok if i send a game that i made before this contest ,
like my Asteroids clone ?
Posted By: George

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 02/16/07 07:58

Sure. Any game that follows the rules from Aum is ok.

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 02/17/07 02:51

i making a game wear you kill pigs. i was wondering if this would be allowed for the contest? i don't really no what a casual game is so...
Posted By: George

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 02/17/07 06:18

Sure. As long as the violence isn't extreme and all the action happens virtually
Posted By: Bot190

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 02/17/07 12:54

all that happens is you swing a sword and the pigs fall down. in game offcourse.
Posted By: George

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 02/17/07 19:37

"in game offcourse". You have lifted a weight off my chest!

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 02/18/07 03:06

hehe it should actually read in game of-course or something like that. my spelling isn't the best so.

Did Jcl replied to this? Just curious, I might not even have a game ready before the deadline anyways, but still ...

Cheers

Sure, you can use resourced scripts as well. I have posted JCL's reply in another thread (Spring 2007 contest - fresh information).

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/14/07 10:03

just another question, is it a requirement that the game doesnt exceed 20mb?
Posted By: George

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/14/07 19:14

We will accept entries that have a few MBs over 20, but a 50-100 MB game isn't "casual" anymore. Don't forget that this (20MB) is the size of the archived demo, so the game itself can be bigger.

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/14/07 19:44

thanks clearing that up. just another follow up question.

lets say i have a game ready soon and want to submit it to the contest too, i will make a special contest demo.
so that conitec can use this and only this contest demo for any purpose.

conitec does not get the rights for my whole game automatically?
Posted By: George

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/14/07 19:51

You can submit any version of the game - Conitec doesn't get "the rights" for it. We will simply upload it to Conitec's website, allowing the other users to check it out. See it this way: if you send a good demo, you get free advertising

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/16/07 02:59

They do however maintain the right to use screen shots on the web page, is this correct, if so, again... "free advertising".

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/16/07 17:43

I would like to expose a resourced demo for the users and to supply an
archives with the open source code for George and JCL.
It's possible?

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/16/07 18:23

Sure, if you want to impress us with your code . It's not needed, though.

Thanks a lot George. Now I then has to clean crumbs on the table.

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/24/07 00:29

just wanted to ask if an online bomberman game a casual game.
it's simple, fun, good for breaks etc.
but it's "online"... hope that doesn't kill the right to be a casual game
Posted By: George

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/24/07 06:26

I'll need a bit more info: what do you mean by "online"? Does it only run in a browser? Do you keep the high scores online?
Posted By: Samb

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/24/07 23:33

no, it isnt a brwoser game...
its.. well an online game.
you conenct to a server, choose a session and then play with other guys bomberman over the net... of course with A6 but powered by populace
so it's a full online game. no offline mode (at the moment).
you can play it in LAN without any problems, but I optimaze the code to be playable over the internet.
but I don't know if you mean "casual games" = games for a single person... like pacman or... solitaire

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/25/07 20:36

I see - it's a multiplayer game. If you implement a single player game mode it's good for the contest.
Posted By: Samb

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/25/07 21:07

okay.. well... AAAAARRRRGGHHHH!!!!!!!
yes.. that describe it perfectly.. just "argh"
multiplayer isnt yet finished and a single player must be implented... yes.. it's "argh"
hope i can do it

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/26/07 09:56

Why can't a multiplayer online only game be a casual game...nowadays that everybody is almost constantly conected to the www??? If this was not explicit said in the contest rules (I cant find them right now), I woulden't see any reason why online multiplayer only games can't be casual games...do you? No offence George...in the end your word is final and that's fine for me...I just thought it'll be good to support each online/multiplayer effort made with 3dgs
Posted By: Samb

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/26/07 12:44

you're right loopix
but I had worries (thats why I asked ).
when I image a casual gamer I see a total newbie who doesn't know what to do with a PC. now, the game ask you for tje IP of the server... hmm not very casual
the problem isn't really to program the single player, I can just use the code from the multiplayer.
but I have to create more levels... well I will finish the multiplayer part today so I have some days to create the single player part.

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/26/07 17:10

A search on Google revealed the fact that a few "casual multiplayer games" exist, so we can accept your entry as it is.
Posted By: Samb

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/26/07 18:14

wow thanks.
now I can use the next few days to optimaze the multiplayercode

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/26/07 19:33

Thanks George! Your revised answer shows the greatness of your attitude and proofs once again your generousity! You know...I had to be unpolite cause Samb promised me half of the prize he's going to win (yeah...I'm lying all the time!)

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/26/07 22:21

lol yes... we are going to split the A6 upgrade in 2.
so we need to win another contest to get a full A6.
we are so genius
Posted By: George

Re: Spring 2007 contest question - 03/27/07 09:55

Oh, ok. So I guess that I'll have to influence the jury and make sure that Samb wins the contest; otherwise, I'll have to deal with both of you
