Re: Aum88 ready - 11/02/09 14:25

"quest for the contest"

@George:

1.
where is the closeline for a retrogame? Is "Black and White 1" retro or not? (as Example only , I dont wanna clone it -because have a RL too)

2.
What about copyright stuff. When I create a 3D model of "Turrican" or maybe "Lara croft". What have I to respect?

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/02/09 15:25

Contest suggestion: to avoid running into copyright issues maybe you should define "how" the retro games should be delivered. Are original graphics allowed (risky!) and the reduplication is what is most important or can we take / or mix retro games in a new settings, like "Super Tusc Brothers" instead of Super Mario Bros. or "Acktris" instead of Tetris or so...?

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/02/09 17:17

and what is retro? can i do retro gameplay with uated visuals, like in pepe (classic SNES era beat 'em up) or do the visuals have to be retro aswell?
what defines retro? is doom retro? can anyone with an ego shooter apply? what about tetris?
a little bit more info on that part would be good...

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/02/09 17:20

Retro games? I think my 3D-Tetris game would fit. I know it would be the third time I participate with the same project, but this time it will be much better^^.
And this is of course a good motivation to work harder finally finish the update I announced already one and a half years ago grin
And I'm planning to rename it, because, as HeelX said, I might get legal problems with the name "Tetris" at one time...

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/02/09 18:29

Hm, maybe you can't define the term "retro" but you KNOW what it is "retro" or not when you SEE it. For instance, your Popeye game is definetely NOT retro for me. I think the look and presentation as well as usage of "old" techniques is very important to be considered "retro". E.g. the new Megaman game is brand new but also retro as hell, they even simulated flickering and limited sprites like on the NES. Consider making a Popeye game in 2D with no interpolated sprites or no sprite rotation and sprite animation and that stuff with old skool 8bit-music :-) that would be a charme!

I think JCL/George should -not- define what "retro" is, because it is a style, a feeling.. the users should decide.

Just my thoughts.. what is important are some clear instructions regarding legal issues. The rest should be relatively loose. Haha, a screen resolution limitation would be neat, like 256x224 for the SNES ;-)

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/02/09 19:47

@heelx:

I dont believe that the Intension of this Contest is to recreate old games only using the 2D engine.

In this case the Artists here around would have a big plus because of their painting skills for all the panels and sprites.

If I get it right, so we should create games from old concepts in an more modern style.

Like I said Turrican in 3D!

And yes JCL or George should say a few words more about.

greetings,
gri

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/02/09 20:00

Ok, don't let us discuss it, just wait and see. I guess JCL and George will be a little bugged again because everytime a contest gets announced everyone is yellin' around ;-)

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/02/09 20:43

Thank you for the kind comments, guys. And thank you, Landixus!

A retro game is one that uses an old gameplay idea / concept. If it used to run on a Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore 64, etc it's certainly good to go for the contest. We don't want to limit the contest to those games though, so feel free to choose any other thing; a 3D remake of an old 2D game would be interesting as well.

Always make sure to have the written permission of the author / copyright holder if you plan to use his work - it's one of the perpetual contest rules. I'd change the name of the game a bit, use slightly different characters for it, etc. The big guys won't have you arrested if you use their work - they'll usually send you a letter written by one of their lawyers first.

The deadline for the contest is the 1st of February 2010 - it's written in the magazine.

For a huge portion of us users that and/or PS1 were our first consoles, so it certainly makes sense.

I guess so.
That "yes" seems rather reluctant laugh

A "hmm... we'll see..." would have been reluctant laugh
Posted By: JibbSmart

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/04/09 07:20

Fair enough grin Perhaps I should have interpreted it as more of an: "I don't see why not!"

Either way, for me that generation's almost as retro as it gets (retro's not interesting unless it's accompanied by a feeling of nostalgia).

Wow. Let's see what this contest will bring with (:
I'm so happy about how things have come together now...
I finally have more time for working with GameStudio again.
First ideas which came into my mind when I read the information about the contest were remakes of gimes like Doom, Ultima VII, Dungeon Keeper, Super Mario(!), PacMan and so on...
Good luck to all participants ;-)

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/14/09 16:32

Hm. Do we real have to clone a game?
Or can we make something, which has a retro-look, might has some gameplay elemts and the controls of a retro game, but which isn't a direct clone of a game?
Posted By: Joozey

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/15/09 16:36

I'll participate with a littlebig adventure-like remake.
Awesome contest grin
Posted By: George

Re: Aum88 ready - 11/16/09 09:52

No, you don't have to clone a game - just make sure that your demo has that hard to describe retro feel wink
Joozey, I look forward to seeing your LBA remake - that was a great game (and I'd say quite advanced for its era).

February 2010? how long is this contest? i thought they lasted a month each?

aum contests take 3 months, beginner contests are only 1 month.

The contests from Aum take 2-3 months; sometimes a month isn't enough to create a great game.

Re: Aum88 ready - 12/06/09 21:07

well I make my mind a mix.

Can I make a remake of a old game with retro sytle
and/or a new game with retro style (graphics, sound..., like 60's or 20's "1920, 1960...")

My english and my confusion make my head to explode

Car template: how do we add a "retry" option... - 01/27/10 17:42

Hello George,

Thank you for the car template series. It's a really good idea.

There is one thing though that is missing, and which I am having trouble programming myself: it's an option which lets the player start over the race (the classical restart/continue option).

I tried doing it myself, but I am running into trouble with the physics engine. I tried the following:

1. disabling the physics, moving the chassis and wheels, then enabling the physics but the car just flies into the air.

2. removing the chassis and wheels entities, and then recreating them with ent_create(), at their starting place and orientation. The car works, but the wheels are slightly out of place, and it goes all screwy.

3. I'll spare you the other silly and desperate things I tried afterwards. laugh

I checked your 5 templates and could not find an option to restart the game. I think it would be a good addition to the template.

Thank you very much for your excellent work and your contagious can-do attitude! laugh

Regards,
Thomas

Re: Car template: how do we add a "retry" option... - 01/27/10 21:02

A simple level_load instruction should do the job. Try it and let me know what happens.

Re: Car template: how do we add a "retry" option... - 01/28/10 08:35

Hi George,

yesterday I sent in our entry Meteor Mess 3D (a remake of Maniac Mansion) for the retro contest to resources@acknex.net.

I got no reply to my mail so I just wanna ask if you have received it and if everything you need was included?

Best regards,
Pegamode.

I've got it! Sent a confirmation email as well.

Re: Car template: how do we add a "retry" option... - 01/28/10 10:44

Thanks :-)

I'm already very excited about all the entries for this contest.
I've started in the 80s with a Commodore VC20 and then the story goes C64, Amiga, Atari STE, PC and some consoles ... let's see what good old classics could look like today.

Regards,
Pegamode.
