"once the world’s most powerful particle accelerator and now slated to go dark forever in September or earlier, whenever Fermilab runs out of money to operate it."

"Damn, we need money, let's make something up for this statistical error to keep the money coming"

worth discussion."

Haha, nice. Especially matching to "said Christopher Hill, a theorist at Fermilab who was not part of the team. “If it is real, it would be the most significant discovery in physics in half a century.” ".

yes, that could be the reason. laugh

but their competition, the LHC guys seem to be excited about it too and they will examine their data. so maybe it's not complete nonsense?

Oh come on guys. Not everything new is necessarily someone trying to trick you. It's not like they say "we've discovered something new", they're saying "we might have discovered something new".

They also know (and say) that CERN will be interested in this, so they're actually passing this knowledge on to the LHC-guys, not desperately trying to save their own collider.

By all their "assuming" it's easy to see, all they want is more money. If they didn't happen to "probably find" something new, they would lose their job soon.
