Cannot decide!!?? help! - 01/04/10 01:40

hi..

My team and i are planning a greater game. But we´ve no clue wich Engine we want to use.

There´s UDK, Unity, A7, Irrlicht...

Second problem: I can write Lite-C and i´m learning C# now for a Year. Soo.. i´ll need to learn C++ for UDK...
Learning C#, lite-C AND C++ .. no!

I suggested A7, because i´ll buy the Pro Edition soon, wich will give me more options and possibilities..
But my friends hate A7, because they´re thinking A7 gives bad graphics, performance and bad Usertools (MED, GED, WED).. And everytime i say, that they can model with 3s Studio Max, C4D..ect, they block everything away...

What should i do.. learning C++ just because they want UDK (slowly I catch at UDK to hate).. or what?

plz help me *cry*

udk is mainly programmed with unrealscript.(orsomething like that)

UDK uses C++ and java.. or did i read wrong?

Quote:
UnrealScript features a built-in compiler and integrated preprocessor. Java and C++ programmers can jump right in to scripting.

they are just trying to say it's smiliar to c++ and java and it's object oriented. It looks more like java though.

A7 can create beautiful graphics. Show them something from the Gallery.

also, if they think getting good graphics with a7 will be hard, they may think twice before going with UDK. It's not so hard to have good graphics on A7. Plus graphics are not the point that makes indie titles stand out, it's gameplay, story, and new expirements that big companies can't risk to try to.

i can´t understand their dislike of A7.. I like A7. Easy to use and i´m really better in Scripting with Lite-C, than with C# or C++

But i think they don´t understand my point - i´ve no head for learning a third language...
In their head.. scripting is the fastest job.. They don´t think of the time i need to learn a new language and the UDK Syntaxes...

i´ve really no clue of what i should do... Y_Y

Try to get them to tell you exactly what they don't like about A7. Have them write it down onto a list, if you have to. Then come up with arguments that will defeat their assumptions, and hopefully they should listen to you. Once you've got them listening, explain to them how you can get results right away with A7 since you already understand it, whereas using another engine would slow the project down significantly. Convince them to try A7, if only for a little bit, and if they like it, then you can stick with it for the rest of the development cycle.

If they won't agree with you, then all you can do is either switch to another engine or leave the team.

You can also go with Unity if you like C# tongue

interesting first post.

I would suggest Unity or A7. In unity you can either script in C# or javascript which is similar to c-script/lite-c the basic workflow with unity is in smaller projects pretty good but i don't really like it if things start to get bigger.
You may be able to create good looking stuff with unity or udk in a short period of time but i'd prefer A7 since you have a lot more howto knowlegde using A7 and with it better ways to create own little tools such as optimized level/object editors for your own purpose.
I would highly recommend to use the system you know best if you are really going to start off a big project.
And for the graphics i dont think A7 does look soooo too bad wink

Use A7 for your game prototype and make sure the models look great in a testlevel. It is easy for you to create a prototype using an engine you are familiar with.

Learning a new engine, new language, new workflow, ... for your first big project is not a good idea. If you switch to another engine, it might take up to 6 month until you know how the system works internal and what is the best way to develop a given feature.

Spend some time for tweaking the graphics and tuning the engine after you have your prototype up and running.

You should be able to export the models for use in other engines, too. Check these models in other engines and compare the visual results in terms of quality and fps.

ihr könnt auch deutsch antworten, dann versteh ich euch besser.. ich schreib nur englisch für unsere englischen freunde hier ^^

thx for help.. i´ll ask my team what they hate so much at A7 when they come onlien again ( or tomorrow.. when they come to my birthday party ^^ )
