Steam GreenLight as new way to get your games on Steam - 08/13/12 13:28

Hi,
Just found this
http://steamcommunity.com/greenlight/

it seems there is a new way to get your produkts to steam.
On GreenLight you can register your project(even in VERY early stages). You can even share Videos, Screens and early builds of your project

The community can vote your projekt. With this system, you can get the required public attention to get your game on steam.

i havent investigated any further into this system, but it definetly sounds very interesting for small/indie developers to get somewhere started.

Greetings
Rackscha

It seems lot of people have been posting fake games and copies, and valve decided to set a filter: now you have to pay 100$ in order to get your game on Greenlight. That money will be used for NGOs

Some recent numbers:
3,195 submitted games
1,100 of those have been removed for various reasons
949,156 users have voted for a game that they want to see
9,998,476 overall votes
10 games only got the "green light" so far
(German source: http://www.gamestar.de/news/branche/3005239/steam_greenlight.html)

Makes me feel only cautiously optimistic.

Same crap as with crowdfunding, not a chance for small Indie Devs but a chance for those with big connections and some talent in online marketing.

I disagree!

I have the strong belief that GreenLight is a great platform for Indies, just because you reach the people. Having a million positives votes for 1,1k games is an average of 909 users, that KNOW your game and WANT that game, they even are saying that they want to give you MONEY for it. Having so much people which maybe also tell others by word of mouth is a great opportunity. And even if you have roughly approx. 9 million / 1100 games = 8100 users that vote against your game, you can take the benefit from that there are at least 8000 other users that know your game, even if they won't buy it. With such a high user review frequency, you can at least get valueable information from the comments.

The downside of such a high user basis is that you need to stand out. Sure.

I had a short look at the racing games at GreenLight and I opened some tabs for approx. 3 games for which I was interested by the cover picture. So, at least, you need good screenshots. I didn't read the text, but I looked only at the video and how the avatar of the developer looks like. Strange, isn't it? But that's the way it is. With the streamlined layout and content possibilities and the infrastructure backing from Valve, I am sure that you have the best opportunities right there, if - and only if - your game is so far, that you are able to sell it very SOON.

And you don't need talent to make a good video. If your game doesn't stand out from the pictures and from recorded footage, it's core is maybe already broken or so - maybe your game is just fun to you - and not to anyone else wink

@Superku: If you do it right, I am sure that your game gets the necessary attention to be a release-candidate for Steam. But finish the game first, please smile

Starlaxis is also there ( HERE ) but the bad thing is that you don't know how much votes in numbers your game is getting.

"Your item is 17% of the way to making the top 100 list"
is all I can see. But what does this mean in numbers?
Are hundred people interested in the game or thousand?

Only Valve knows the answer...

@ HeeLX I totally agree with you
@ Sajeth you have a point, nothing do not need connections in this world
do not believe that talent alone can convert a dream to reality laugh

ok, I told you guys this system is good, but Steam can do better system

There is a huge problem in that system, MAJOR ONE
Based on Greenlight news:

from 30 August 2012 till - today!
ONLY 1 indie game released!!!!!!!

2 months per game?? Indie fans at steam are very upset by the way
THEY WANT T PLAY MORE INDIE GAMES

So they moved from flow system (modern) to queue system (old)
looool

I am thinking to develop a system for them and send it for free laugh
sometimes, I miss developing management systems

1 Game?

There are already more then 20 games on greenlight released. If not all of the are indie just shows the lack of interest.
I, for example, don't like most of the games on greenlight and prefer AAA titles.
