Are there commercial level editors/world builders for A7/A8?

Are there commercial level editors/world builders for A7/A8? - 01/29/13 16:53

I am looking for something a bit more like a world builder for A7/A8 than Wed and Med. I need to be able to sculpt and paint terrain (need very large terrains), edit shaders and post processing effects, deal with pathfinding, create paths, place audio and other triggers, create roads and place objects, vegetation, etc. Pretty much allowing you to create your game worlds and then out-putting to a A7/A8 compatible file set.

I have found Map Builder and it is a very good start, but it crashes quite a bit. I am looking for a stable, commercial product that utilizes the A7/A8 engine, but has its own professional-grade level editor/world builder. Commercial meaning that it's full-featured, rock-solid stable and probably costs $$.

Does any such product exist?

Well, another company did it, they just don't seem interested in selling it - just an in-house tool.

No one else has created a quality world-editor?

IceX 3.0 is a world editor for Gamestudio from Oliver2s, but not yet ready to go. Conitec themselves are writing a new official Leveleditor for Gamestudio. And Sivan is creating an advanced world editor that seems to be very powerful. http://mapbuilder.zxq.net/

I personally would recommend to use Blender and import the Levels into MED and then WED.

I bought icex a while ago nd gave up on it.

I want my engines to be all inclusive. I want to sculpt terrain around placement of other objects. Leadwerks and the S2 engine both low me to do that. Currently I am using Leadwerks for my projects but I always come back to see what conitec is cooking up. I started with A1 engine (or whatever the first one was) and the quoole editor was great then but sucks now.

if you need really huge terrain, you would need a 3dgs pro licence, or can choose some other engines supporting terrain lod and chunk streaming (mesh and textures) by default, like Esenthel and UDK. both are cool, and free until you release a commercial product.
in 3dgs, below pro, it results in a performance drop, but can be okay if the overall level is designed well, and you use lod carefully. or you can use multiple terrains attached together on edges.
imo in my editor single terrain based level creation is easy, and most settings can be adjusted in real time. it is designed rather for the RTS genre, but can be okay for other games, if you learn its handling (okay I should update and finish the documentation).
but anyway, what kind of game do you want to make?

I htink we must stay realistic.

Big game based on terrain + paint trees, paint waving grass, solid editor that rocks : pick up another afffordable 3D engine indeed (UDK, Crysis, Unity, Esenthel , C4 engine, LE 2 , Torque 3D ? etc ...)

If you go for 3DGS , even with pro, it will lacks features in terrain , instanciation and vegetation tools ... stuff you can find on other 3D solution for huge terrain based game.

Esenthel lacks instancing, 3dgs pro has sprite instancing but don't know how much performance improvement it ensures. unity's terrain and vegetation system is also fine, but not for really huge worlds. currently I'm experiencing with UDK programming, in theory it is the best in this area.
