Saving and loading files under vista.

Saving and loading files under vista. - 11/12/08 22:59

We have a game that writes and reads external files to a sub-folder of the game folder. This works perfectly under XP, however some vista systems don't like us using this sub folder, even with admin rights. We get the E1514 error which means it didn't get a file handle when try to write to the file.

What are the rules with Vista and where you can and can't write files to?

What is the safest way to do this so it will work on all systems.

I'm thinking write them to the game folder in the published version.

Thanks in advance.

I can confirm this. File operations work under Vista 100% like on XP or older versions. You just should write the files into subfolders of the application.

Yes, I have no problems either on my Vista system, however my Publisher was having trouble on their system, with installed version from CD Master.

I should have pointed out, this is not quite a normal setup.
My application is called from my publishers Director Project.
And it was losing admin rights in the running of my project.

Apparently thay had to write a manifest to tell Vista to run my application with administrator privileges.

Thanks for your feedback.
