reinvesting - still confused - 09/29/14 15:26

I am still trying to figure out this reinvesting thing. I have Zorro S subscription and using the Z12 system.

So the only things I can change is MMax = 100 option in the z12.ini or the Margin slider. Obviously I cannot change any square roorts or script bec Z12 code is not available.

I know the first response to this post will be "read the manual" but I've been reading the manual and am not a programmer or coder nor mathematician. So trying to figure out whats the simplistic way to calculate to make ZorroS Z12 system re-invest the gains going forward. for example if the account doubles then I am assuming the Z12 system should be trading double the lots it was trading initially. If this is already how it works then ill wait for it, if it has to be tweaked then I need to know how in easy to follow directions.

I have been reading the following manual pages

http://zorro-trader.com/manual/en/zsystems.htm
http://zorro-trader.com/manual/en/kelly.htm

There is a mention of modifying the Z12.fac file and OptimalF parameter column in there for the asset.

What I am saying is there is no clear instructions with easy to follow examples for the technically challenged.

Can anyone please give me a easy to follow example. I will write an example and you can expand on that to save you time...

What I have:
ZorroS running Z12 system
initial capital $5000
FXCM US Account

My Settings:
Z12.ini
NFA = 1
FXOnly = 1
MMax = 100
Phantom = 0
Comma = 0
Mute = 1
Weekend = 2
Verbose = 2
BrokerPatch = 0
Preload = 0

**
Margin = 35
Risk = 10
Panic = 0
***

not sure if I should upload the z12.fac or z12.par files here.

So here is what I am trying to solve or get an answer to:
1: lets say I run this system with above settings till the balance on account goes to $10000, meaning it doubled from 5000 to 10000. now I want to make sure the system re-invests the profits. so what do I change? do I change anything in the z12.ini? do I move the margin slider around? or do nothing its all taken card of? what do I do? thanks,

KK

The short answer: if your account doubles from $5000 to $1000, increase the Margin slider by 40%, i.e. from 50 to 70.

The long answer: use the formula described in http://zorro-trader.com/manual/en/kelly.htm.

Hi killerkhan, jcl. There have been a few other threads about this in the past, covering both withdrawing and reinvesting. Upgrading to new Zorro versions is also involved. It got complicated enough for me that I put together a spreadsheet to try to help. For your & others' benefits, I've tried to convert it into a template with instructions, and an example of use.
One thing to note is the conscious decision to not reduce Margin in the event of over-withdrawal. I've done this for 2 reasons:

1) It complicates the formulas - for me unnecessarily, because
2) I don't intend to ever withdraw more than recommended - if I mistakenly do, I'd rather fix that error.

This is by no means perfect and comments/improvements/corrections are welcome.

thank you HTH. I just played around with it, it makes life alot easier for sure. I wish it was easier to do in zorro without going through loops and hoops. The margin slider could be a % value that way account balance going up or down the system will auto calculate the margin required, but instead we have to do some hard core math laugh

Can we put something on the future version or feature list to make this margin more of a percent of account value so it automatically self adjusts rather doing it manually OR add it as another feature where if you feel like doing math all day long you can still do that and if you like me you can use the auto method instead.

Thanks again HTH

Hi JCL. Since Z12 and Z3 use OptimalF, is it necessary to limit re-margining as per the square root rule?

Nothing is necessary, but it is recommended. Check out workshop 6 - it discusses the pros and cons of 4 methods of reinvesting.

- And no, an automated margin setting in the Z systems is not planned. I would not leave such a decision to a machine.
