Colorize plot background by boolean?

Is it possible to colorize the plot background per step? eg. A helpful way to visualize a regime filter is by colorizing the subplot background red/green to represent when it's active and when it's inactive.

There is no variable for the plot background, but you can achieve a similar effect by plotting bars in a transparent color.
