Support Mac platform please

I think after the MMOG project abandon Op group should have focus on engine development.

From this article I believe it is much worth to port GameStudio (A8?) to Mac, at lease allow publish to Mac.

it's probably won't just be a port, kinda more like major rewrite. I personally dont expect such thing before a8.

if 3DGS would support Mac I would be freaking out, that would be the best ever and a big step to prevent developer to move to Unity!

Re: Support Mac platform please - 01/27/10 06:46

As said mutiple times, the core of A7 is based on DirectX. So this would be more or less a rewrite of the engine core and I doubt this is going to happen anytime soon unless someone shows some dollars.

I think there's not that much gamers on Mac.

Maybe it would be easier to get it run on an XBox ?!?

Re: Support Mac platform please - 01/27/10 10:09

Our plans about other platforms are:

- We won't support Mac. With Bootcamp etc. Gamestudio already runs on the Mac.
- We won't support Linux, with exception of a possible future Linux server.
- We can port finished games to consoles on request, with approval of the console manufacturer.
- We will possibly add phone/PDA platform support in future versions.

I'm working on getting acknex running on windows mobile 6 now, through the .NET compact framework. Failing that, use win32. But I don't have much time to work on it at the moment.

However Bootcamp cost extra and to extra cost to buy a Windows license. Not good for causal gamer, and I think it is really bad for indie developer.

I don't know the market of game engine and don't know the unit sales, insteand of read the engine ranking from devmaster.net, after doing some research I found the following is interesting:

http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/3dgamestudio.com?p=tgraph&r=home_home
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/stonetrip.com?p=tgraph&r=home_home
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/torquepowered.com
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/unity3d.com?p=tgraph&r=home_home

It seems multiplatform engine got higher internet traffic.

Re: Support Mac platform please - 07/12/10 06:07

Finally I pre-order Unity 3.0 last night as I am impatient regarding multiplatform support, and I need a new 'toy' to play around while working on my evil academic project.

Regarding 'Mac' support my view is different to Opgroup, their view of 'Mac' support is Mac 'Hardware' + bootcamp + Windows, my view is Mac 'OSX'.

Re: Support Mac platform please - 07/13/10 20:27

why doesnt GS runs on MAC with bootcam to win7 ??

Re: Support Mac platform please - 07/13/10 20:40

It runs really good, but this is not a Mac OS X (the last two characters of Mac are lowercase ;)), it's called a native Windows 7.

And I really hate to boot windows on my Mac, it destroys my workflow completely.

Edit: I would love to see GStudio on my Mac, but not in it's current form! Gamestudio doesn't conform to what you expect on a Mac. It feels wrong in so many cases from a Mac user point of view.

Re: Support Mac platform please - 07/13/10 21:08

hmm
I found something that could help.
But I am not sure if this is possible!

What is with some emulation software like "Wine".
If I understood right ,It emulates a Win application on MAC and Linux.

hope it helps.

Re: Support Mac platform please - 07/13/10 21:13

It's still Mac, not MAC wink

And Wine (or Darwine on the Mac), is not really good for games. Its really slow because it doesn't run the applications native but builds a layer to provide Windows APIs for the applications (and some more things around the applications life cycle).

It's ok for normal applications, but not for games. Last but not least, it doesn't support every kind of application and API.

Re: Support Mac platform please - 07/13/10 21:36

@JustSid:
It might be a bit slower, but at least i got CSS(i know..its not an up2date game^^) working very well on Linux.

Re: Support Mac platform please - 07/13/10 22:36

CSS is a pretty damn up2date game, it last updated less than a month ago and now has Mac OS X support.

For the GS on Mac OS thing, there is parallels desktop 5, which really runs all windows applications inside Mac OS, but of course performance of this apps are uncomparable to native windows. f.i. With bootcamp win7(note that this is nearly same thing as win7 on a PC with smiliar specs as iMac) on iMac, you get 512+ fps on single cube model, while with parallels you only get 40 fps.

Imho as for mac support, any other support other then native Mac support is unacceptable.

Editors would require partial rewrite in large chunks to natively run on Mac, also that requires engineers/programmers experienced with Mac. I think engine itself would not be very hard to get it run on mac other than the plugin and the shader system.

Re: Support Mac platform please - 07/15/10 15:26

a friend of mine hhas a Mac with bootcamp, its slow to boot up on windows, but, i did not have problems with it.

What kind of workflow you mean, "working with gs on a different level" S:
I not very mac expert..

Re: Support Mac platform please - 07/25/10 22:00

@Quadraxas:
With up2date i meaned its not that actual Icandy game(Assassinscreed2, Bioshok2, etc).

Its still updated, but GRaphics are relative low(so it doesnt eat to much performance and leaves some room for programms running in background like wine.
And actual game wouldnt run on wine i think(eating to much performance and current direct x problems maybe)
