WED

WED - 06/05/14 00:03

Editing in wed is a nightmare. I decided to do some indoor levels but it's looking like it's gonna have to be cracker jack box simple or no dice. I know all the cool kids are using high end modellers to make their maps but I just find the work flow a pain.

1. Texture lock should be renamed to texture lottery. I spent a good chunk of time making a pretty neat looking hallway. I finally get to a point where im feeling good about it and... One of the columns against the wall are all messed up. Speaking of which, I wish there was a tool in WED that could calculate and wrap a texture around a cylinder. That would be amazing. Anyway... So I ungroup the blocks - when suddenly - all the wall textures are pooched. CTRL-Z went out for lunch break I guess because the history had been erased for some reason. Luckily I had a back up file. So I start again from where I saved and carefully got it right. I duplicate the group and rotate it - when suddenly - all the textures are sketching out. If I had a stack of papers somewhere close I would throw them up in the air.

2. Well. I guess Just 1. It would be cool to have customizable block creation. Like arches, bends, etc.

After rotating a group with texture lock.

Ok... So I closed wed and took off for the night. Just came home, opened it up and the textures are all in the right spot. I'm so confused right now.

once I had also rendering problems that recovered after a restart... but it was not with wed, just a script generated level.

Gonna send my own head through the drywall pretty quick here.

Follow my WED tutorial - see if it helps.

Tip1: ctrl-z doesnt work with undoing textures, only block placements
tip2: Dont use texture lock - Ewww. Use the settings panel and actually reposition the texture
Tip3: Scope Down / up (DONT DELETE YOUR GROUPS!!)
Tip4: Use the reset button to reset textures to original settings

every arch in the hallway has 9 faces. there are 8 arches in every hallway. there are 8 hallways. 576 face textures to reposition manually? I might as well throw out my lawn mower and grab some nose hair clippers to do the yard lol

I would really, honestly suggest modeling it out instead.
I don't build levels in that degree with WED anymore, however I created a tutorial for those who are interested in understanding the fundamentals, and the possible setbacks.

Patience will get you what you want.

Sadly Texture Lock has always been somehow buggy, it was way worse when the feature was introduced but I can confirm that here are still said issues (textures completely messed up after some operation/ look different when you start WED or load the level a second time and others).

I will compromise. My games going to be a free release anyway. Not trying to impress anyone - but at the same time I am.

WED is crashing on me almost every 20 minutes. It needs an auto save feature.

Re: WED - 06/08/14 01:37

The more often you save, the less often it crashes - As i've noted.

The less often I save, the more often nearby lamps crash.

Put a sticky note in front of you that reminds you to ctrl+s when you see it.

Your brain is conditioned to reflex after you do something some 500+ times. Have fun. Took me some time but now ctrl+s is as natural as driving. Sometimes I press Ctrl+S when im not even doing something that requires me to save... >_<

Anyway, I do agree that It should be fixed - But shouldnt be a rush thing imo

WED is strange, it is not really a bad app per se, but there are some things that really really drives one crazy.

I wonder if the "new WED" is going to be an update or a rewrite, and if it will be only available in Acknex 9 or 10?

today morning I was under the impression that new WED is the wife of Columbo.
