Best texture file - 10/05/10 13:41

Hello everyone!
I was just making textures, and I wondered: what is the best file type for textures? Most of the time, I use *.bmp, but I guess there are better types. Assuming you don't need any transparent/overlay parts or something, what is the best file type for textures (with criteria such as quality, file size, etc.)? Bmp? Png? Pcx? Gif? Another type?

Thanks,
Roy

For quality TGA.
So you have nice Alpha Channels.

PNG is not propperly supported by Gamestudio.
It would be the better format though.
(smaller, more options)

This choice depends on what you exactly need:
what quality you want to achieve,
and how much memory you want to spend.

I mostly use Bmp's
they are converted to 16 bits textures in the engine,
thus saving a lot of video memory.
for high quality textures you could use tga.
if you want to save memory, even better would be dds,
although they offer some lower quality.

these are only some suggestions, I do not have much experience
with the other formats.

I hope this helps a little.

aargh Damocles and blink were faster!

Hello,
in gamestudio tga(best quality) and dds(middle quality but compressed)ar for textures with alpha-channel the best formats, bmp and pcx for non-transparent textures.

Thank you for all the replies. Are the any low-cost/free programs, with which I can make .dds files? And is there a big difference between .bmp and .dds in quality or rendering?

you can use DXTbmp, it's free and it can convert bmp, tga, dds and others
