Levels in GTKRadiant, imported to WED?

Levels in GTKRadiant, imported to WED? - 06/27/06 05:13

Well, I personally don't like the level interface for WED, and find it very difficult.

I am used to "Gtkradiant", a very powerfull level editor, that is easy to use.

It saves maps in a .map file.

Is there a way to have that, as a model or not, be your game level, NOT INCLUDING LIGHTS, ENTITIES, ECT., Just surfaces?

I could do it through Milkshape 3d, import is as a .map, and export it as a .md2.

But, if I added it as a model, first of all, how would it add collision, and if, and when I figured out how to add collision, would it just prevent me from touching anything but the outside of it, or would it allow me to just not be able to walk through the polygons?

Please help me =-)

i once tried to move GTKradiant 1.6 levels (Quake 3 Arena) to wed. you will have to face several difficulties: textures are not moved, all collision helpers in GTKradiant will come out as solid boxes in WED, curved surfaces are not supported (that was why i tried it). you gonna re-work a lot in wed...

i do not understand your skepticism referring to models and collision. sphere shows us that it's well possible, and many other game developers here use model-only levels due to speed reasons.

That is what I meant.

I would save my map as a .map file, use milkshape to import it, then EXPORT IT AS A .MD2, or .MDL.

So, not just are curves supported, you get collision.

That was my hopefull idea.

Is milkshape able to import a .map file, is there any plugin for Importing .map files into milkshape, if so tell which one.

It depends on your version.

If you go right now, and get the new version, it comes with it.

It does NOT come with any versions earlier then 1.7.0.

I have 1.7.0. version, but there does not seem to be any .map plugin. Do I have to have the latest version?

I don't know...

But I just ironically found out AFTER 3 hours of importing my map, that you can open .map files in WED!

Just click OPEN, and where it says "WDL" or whatever WED's levels are, click the down arrow, and just select "MAP" instead.

It doesn't seem to support curves, so I guess we'll have to do those as models.

But still, if only we could get the entities right, we could use GTKRadiant as an alternate level editor, without having to do the entities in WED.

The only thing WED imports properly is lights.
Too bad nobody skilled will want to do 3d gamestudio support (With conitec's permisson, of course).
