i think this marketing term was first used at the time of quake1 when 3d-engines became really 3d instead of pseudo 3d.

descent heavily used "6 degrees of freedom" too for marketing so maybe it's somehow related to the need of quaternion rotation for avoiding gimbal locks with spaceships?

I think all it means is its 3D , i.e. front back left right up down , a full 3d world as oppossed to a 2d one or a faked 3d one.

Grimber has the right answer. X, Y, Z, Pan, Tilt, Roll.

Back "in the day", not all 3D games had six degrees of freedom (look up Raycasting for more info), so this was kind of a big deal. Today...well I guess whomever redesigned the website need another bullet-point.
