Well, i'm creating levels with a6 for a pretty long time now, and i still don't know what the detail flag exactly does. So i tried it. I saw that, when i put the detail flag on, i get two more lines when i build the level:
checking detail intersections, intersecting detail blocks (3/15) - recompiling and checking detail intersections (again). The building takes lots more time.
So my question is:
Can someone please explain me exactly what the detail flag does and the consequenses of setting it on?

Hi!

From the manual:

Quote:

Detail:
this block does not increase the portal count of the level, as normal blocks do. Detail Blocks can be used for small details in the level, like small pillars, ornaments, rounded arcs or other elements which would otherwise increase the portal count and building time. Because Detail Blocks do not suppress the rendering of the scene behind them, they should not be used for objects that hide much of the level - otherwise they will reduce the frame rate. Do not try using Detail Blocks as level boundaries. Detail blocks must not intersect other blocks. They are only visible in D3D mode, and ignored in 8-bit mode as well as by the collision detection. Detail Blocks can slow down lighting calculations. Standard level building rules still apply (e.g. donīt create a block smaller than 2x2x2 quants).

What is the advantage of this?

Basically, I use this general rule: If you can detail flag it, it should be a model.

Jimmy died, today, he blew his brains out into the bay, in the state of mind, its my own private suicide. A stitch in time saves nine... what the hell does that mean?!?

so basically the detail flag is meant for entities. (especially models)
But you can also put the detail flag on on a block (that was actually where i was talking about). where can you use that for then?

you cannot assign the detail flag to models.
The detail flag is for level geometry (blocks) only, as far as I know.
What Towelie meant was:
If you have made something out of blocks and assigned the detail flag to it, it would be better to build this as a model with a model app instead.

ok, thanks for the explanation.
But can you explain me where the portal count exactly is for?

Is there only a connection between the portal count and the frames per second, or is there something else, the portal count does?

Sorry for bumping an old topic, but I would like to know if there is any advantage to using detail blocks, as well. For instance, if you are using blocks with the texture flag set to NONE to cast shadows, the manual says to mark it as detail. Does this help the framerate in any way?
