the typical fur shader is very very hard to pull off right, first you have the issue that it just looks really bad, and other than that, it has to rerender the object 14 times, and then go over every pixel several more times from what i understand. so you might want to look into a differnet option such as attatched polygons with alpha transparancy or something like that, if you cant choose that option, then there is a fur shader on the wiki that works

The fur shader that renders the objects 14 times is deadly slow indeed, although it is using one of the possible techinques, it would be better if someone would write a more 'bumpmapping'-like fur shader which doesn't render an objects 14 times .. By the way, Black and White 2 is using the 'fake fur' technique with sprites or so it seems and looks pretty convincing to me. Perhaps something to look into and try,

Cheers

what's so bad about the 21-pass fur shader? you better shouldn't use it for large models, but for smaller ones it's no big speed difference for me (i have a gf6800 though...)

Well, that shader is not bad at all, but compared to the old DirectX 8 fur shader it's nothing hehehe. Someone should try to convert that old one to DirectX 9, the 21 passes one is too slow for what it does, that DirectX 8 one was way faster ánd looked better. Anyways, it's not that we can't use the 21 passes shader (it runs nice on a Radeon 9600XT and anything better),

Cheers
