Try importing the model using "Import from 3ds" made by Mathias Verhasselt at Free Stuff ---> Models in 3d total.

Does it look like this?

Well isn't this to much highpoly for use in gamestudio? You can import the 3ds in MED and de-select parts (like the head) and later merge them again, but still to highpoly unless you do something about that too I think its better to go for the normal mapping technique and have lots of these high quality models inside A6.

So this problem is because the model is highpoly? Other lowpoly models imported from 3ds had the same problem.

Two things come to mind.

Either the other modeling software exported it incorrectly, or it did it in a slightly different 3ds format that 3dgs does support...

The last. But this model is to highpoly for use directly in Gamestudio. I tried it on my laptop and it almost crashed MED.

Ireng: Yes and I get the same results as you did. Even if you could import this model correctly. How will you use it, did you try to preview as-is? Are you going to create a normal map and put that over a lowpoly version of this model?

My 3d designer sent me various 3ds models and all got incorrectly imported. So I dl' this model to see if the problem was on his version of 3ds. But the problem persisted.

Yes I use a lot of 3ds models to and some don't import correctly due to their complexity. Most 3D modeling packages are able to import/export 3ds. However the way they do can be very different.

Have you tried to import this model in pieces and reconstruct (merge) them inside MED or a better 3d modeling software? This would be painful to accomplish in MED I think.

Also your 3d designer could download the *free* Lite-C which comes with MED to test his work or even save it to mdl format before sending it to you. If his models are as highpoly as the one you showed, then its really not a bad idea to have him create a normal map as well as a lowpoly model for you to use in Gamestudio.

no ,its no problem of 3ds format! (if i create complex object and import it for expample to unwrap3d/milkshape/other version of 3dsmax is no problem ,bud MED do issues! ,i dont understand conitec. they create A7 and from A4 is no fully functional exporter for max. (BTW for max9 non existing any (max-to-mdl)).

Try to import this 3ds model as a whole into Milkshape, I dare you Maybe read my post and try to import this model in pieces into MED or another 3d modeling suite. (with pieces i meant de-select parts when importing 3ds->med)

You are right when you say the Gamestudio importers/exporters should work correctly, but lets not go crazy and think Conitec has 3D Studio Max 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 just to give us a plugin. The SDK is there when you need it and this is the way Malabar did it, they needed a 3D Studio Max plugin so they created it!

I begin to wonder what happend with FBX? Because this importer is inside Lite-C MED. Maybe its not yet fully functional. This plugin should save you from some problems, but if it doesn't work why not inform Conitec and give them detailed bughunt rep., instead of just saying plugin not import my model.

Another option when A7 is released, download the trial and if it not import your 3ds/fbx model correctly. Head to Conitec and say; Sorry can't buy your software because it isn't working with my 3d modeling suite. I'm sure if many people will say they not buy the software unless this works, the work will be done sooner and perhaps A7 prices will go up too

If you can't stand for all this, then maybe you could use a lower version of 3D Studio Max. One which is compatible with currently available importers/exporters. Or if you have access to 3D Studio Max 9 SDK and downloaded the MDL SDK from Conitec. The only two things that would be holding you back are: a skilled programmer plus the money to get him working on this plugin.
