Well, somewhat realistic.
I made this sometime back for a project that has been shelved.

The Cloud is 3 Dimensional and floats around. The bolt is constructed
somewhat randomly each strike out of particles. Looks really cool in action!
Checkout a running demo I made here.

Not two, not one.

I like it but too many strikes
there should be less strikes

For a self constructed lighting and cloud script this isn't bad, the realistic factor is there for sure but there are more realistic looking lighting scripts out there but I think you realise that for yourself
It's a nice try, thxn for sharing this with us

It doesn't look that bad, but I would have choosen different colors. Overall, this looks more realistic to me because of colors: http://flyer.smugmug.com/popular/2/13315661#13315661

Agree with what they said, also think it should be thinner. the pic that phemox gave the link to shows how thin the bolts usually are.

That being said, I like it a lot!
It looks very cool! nice sounds as well... it's a great effeckt!
Somehow the cloud could get lit up more when the bolt is close, just like real lightning does...

good work!

Nice I like it. Can you add some rain to it?

You guys are too kind!

Ok, maybe realistic was too strong a word. I ment realistic in a
GS sort of way! But I am amazed how much better the
lightning now looks following some of your critiques. Just making
it thinner and more blue has improved the bolt alot!

Frazzle, where could I check out these scripts? Or do you mean
other engines than GS? I would like to see how others do it and
maybe learn something!

Mercuryus, the clouds are made from models and textures. They
can be scaled in height or width. The project I mentioned has
many that are different shapes. Oddly having many big clouds
does not slow the frame rate, only if you fly through one and
get close to the transparent texture does the refresh rate
dip some.

I am working on making the bolts "fork" from one to two or three
"streams", and those into sub streams as well. If I get it working
well I will post it.

Thanks!

there's something else wrong as well

look at your pic, you see the "sidebolts" (dunno the real word) aim upward, but the lightning strike goes downward, so these should aim down as well...

that's about all what i didnt read in the previous comments
good luck, and keep the good work up

regards,
