They don't perform better, they just add functionality or improve the engine. They even just exist because of GameStudio with the Exception of newton.

Sylex PPE runs faster than 3DGS's

Newton handles more object quicker than 3DGS does

Sphere renders shaders MUCH faster than 3DGS does...

If you define better = faster you're possibly right... I can't prove these statements correct or false.

I'll admit though, plugins kinda suck to use. It's much easier [and cleaner] when it's part of the engine . Linking the two can pose problems...
