Well, I use pcx for just about everything, but then again, I'm still kinda learning, so I don't need to worry about that so much.

The formats you're using currently are perfectly fine for use w/ 3DGS.

Code:
void main()
{
    cout << "I am MrCode,";
    cout << "hear me roar!";
    system("PAUSE");
}

I find TGA is the best format..In some of my tests pcx were showing wrong colors
while with the same pice of code,TGA was looking great.

I like good 'views' because they have no 'strings' attached..

TGA is my fav image format. Ability to compress, alpha support. Can be written with c-script, etc...

.tga (and GTA) rulez but to larg images I'm using .dds too
For best quality use .tga but for f.e. backgrounds, or LOD's models use .dds as textures to reduce memory

If you want the best quality but the biggest vid mem hit then go with TGA. If you want the smallest vid mem hit but reduced quality then go with DDS. Stay away from JPG. You can export DDS files with free paint programs Paint.NET (via a forum plugin) and The Gimp.
