I was curious to how much homework is being assigned in different states and countries. My son just started 4th grade 2 weeks ago and thanks in part to the new "No Child Left Behind" and resultant state requirements he spends no less than 4 hours, and as many as 5-6 hours a night doing homework. The result is that my wife and/or I also have to spend working the same time my son through a lot of it. It seems to me that being in school for 6 hours then having another 5 hours of homework is a lot for an 8-9 year old kid.

What is school like in Germany? In other countries?

I think that it all depends on the pupil. I'm rather disorganised, and when i was about 10 years old, i could spend a whole day(half in school, half at home doing homework). But if i need to do homework fast i was able to do it in an hour or two. So if your son is studying really hard, but still wastes 5 hours for homework, that's a bit much for 8-9 years

Here in germany school seems to be much easier because i am going to in the 11th grade but i do only 1/2 hours homework a day and my brother in the 5th grade does only about 3/4 hours homework a day and has good marks....

i had 1 hour homwork before. now i visit a job-school and there are no homeworks anymore. Just have to study for exams, that's it.

5 hours of homework is sick, especially for an 8-9 year old child but also for older one.

It is way too much IMO, it is absolutely exaggerated. My son is 12 and he has much much less homework.
But, he isn't at a regular school in german.
School should be 1 or 2 hours longer a day to make the homework at school already! After that the children should have their freetime! The need to have their freetime to play and to develop their skills and find their own ways to enjoy the life!

I don't have a kid, so I answer for myself:

I don't do homework. We don't have any

basically thats my problem too

the homework we get is always so easy that i can either do it in class or do it if the teacher asks me for it out of the back of my head...

if we have to write an essay or so i - of course - do it
