This has to go in the Multiplayer threads because I need help deciding which data base program to use in making a diablo 2 styled multiplayer game.

What database support does 3dgs have with out DLLs? With DLLS? Which do you recommend & why?

No database without DLL. You're left with a flat-file system. Bad. Ugly. Painful.

I recommend you use MySQL. Period.

Since there is a free MySQL DLL in the User Contributions, you should use that.
It's remarkably easy and you can use the full power of a great DB engine for your game.
While SQL queries are not trivial, they are not impossible either and there are tons of online tutorials to help you through it.

Just to be clear, you don't need a MySQL DB for a MP game... something Quake-ish or RTS-ish doesn't won't likely need it. It's only if you have tons of tables and data that you should consider a MySQL DB back-end, such as for a MMORPG.

like i said, i'm trying 2 aim low... so i can actually finish it.. sorry to bust alot of people's bubbles but we all know most people on this forum wont finish their own game let alone an MMORPG! lol

I still think I need a better way to keep my data straight other then simple text files. I guess I have to make my a choice... do I make my own game's data base or data handing crap or do I go with MySQL. Both have their ups and downs. Thanks fastlane ur always helpful.

Honestly, I can't think of any reason why you would want to use anything BUT MySQL:

1) You do not want to make your own DB... pointless programming unless that is what you want to become.
2) Other home-made DB solutions may work, but won't have te versitility or completeness that MySQL already has.
3) The MySQL DLL is very easy to use. As long as you construct the proper query (which is a pain, but only in the string building sense), then it's flawless.
4) It's FREE!!!! DLL AND MySQL... both free!
5) MySQL is universal and hence, all the knowledge gained using it here will carry through to any other engine or project you have!!!

Trust me, it isn't worth wasting time on this decision. DL the MySQL DLL, learn how to use it in 3DGS (make a standalong program to test it... don't try to integrate it into your project until you have some experience with it), learn how to make SQL queries, and go.

try GSTsqlite

very user friendly - NO db server installation needed
sqlite is also supported on many web hostings with php

fastlane69: I don't mean to give you a hard time but as an System Admin and serious C/C++ developer for over 25 years I have to read a lot of licenses. MySQL is not interested in Game Development and their license for using the dll in your own program was over $10,000.00 USD the last time we checked. It is only free to web hosters and not to software developers. We were very sorry to learn this ourselves as we had developed an entire system online of MySQL databases and could not use them even on our local network. We were forced to move to SQLite because of the restrictions from MySQL. Remember they are a for-profit company and have to sell something to keep developing. They sell seminars and code. For us small time developers we have to make sure that we can deliver all parts of our software legally and without restraint.

maybe you are confusing something, but mysql is open source. OSS can not be open source AND (exclusively) commercial, it would defy the whole point.
